What does the “Dentist of the Year” get?
 A little plaque.
What does a dentist do ona roller coaster?
He braces himself.
Where does the dentist get his gas?
 At the filling station.
What do you call a depressed dentist?

Diane Bestrick
Volunteer at P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter
Diane Bestrick
volunteers one day a week at the People’s Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.) at 191st and80th Avenue in Tinley Park, Illinois. She has been a volunteer for three years and says that her work there is “veryrewarding.” The shelter takes in stray and unwanted cats and dogs. Diane’s responsibilities include walking, feeding, and giving medication to the animals. She also spends one-on-one time with the animals by playing with them andshowing them some affection, a part of her job that Diane loves.Another aspect of her involvement with P.A.W.S. that she loves is seeing pets from the sheltergo to loving homes and families. One of Diane’s jobs is showing the animals to potential adopters. The shelter has room for approximately 30 adoptable dogs, although they would like to see farfewer at the shelter at any time. All the dogs are treated for any medical conditions they might haveprior to being adopted, and all the animals are spayed or neutered. Diane says that she sees a lot of young puppies being adopted, as well as older, mature dogs. She says it makes her very happy tosee any dog go to a home that will love it and take of it.Diane has three dogs at her own home that she loves. She has an eight-year-old terrier mix, athree-year-old Cairn terrier, and a mixed-breed dog that had come to the shelter as a victim of Hurricane Katrina.Diane, as well as all of the other volunteers at P.A.W.S., are dedicated to the care and propertreatment of animals. They would like people to be aware of the opportunity to find a great pet at the shelter. To findout more about P.A.W.S., or to see photos of adoptable pets, go to
www.pawsforall.petfinder.com
. The Web site alsolists upcoming events at P.A.W.S. and how to donate necessary items or money to help run the shelter, which operatescompletely on public donations.

Illinois Alaskan Malamute Rescue Association
Susan Haslam
has a three-year-old Alaskan Malamute named “Loki.” Lokicame to Susan through the Illinois Alaskan Malamute Rescue Association(IAMRA), an organization that finds foster and adoptive homes for stray andabandoned Alaskan Malamutes. Loki and his sister were found in the woods insouthern Illinois at approximately eight weeks of age. It is not known if theywere left there by someone or if they ran away, but the rescue association wasthere to take care of them. And Susan was there to take in Loki!Loki was Susan’s second Alaskan Malamute received through IAMRA.Susan’s involvement in the organization included fostering rescued Malamutesand helping with transportation of the dogs. Susan has driven as far as Indianapolis to pick up a Malamute from a“high kill” shelter. She currently promotes the adoption or fostering of the beautiful breed of dog through word of mouth, encouraging people to consider a Malamute as a pet. She states that Alaskan Malamutes are friendly, sociable, and like to be part of a family. In the winter months, Susan participates in IAMRA’s dog-sled demonstrations at variouswinterfests to show off the dogs and to let people see how friendly and lovable they are.You can find out more about Alaskan Malamutes through the rescue association’s Web site,
