ProLiteracy Space in CASE Building Nears Completion

By Francesca Merwin, NWSI Staff Writer
It may still look like one giant construction project, but the pieces are coming together faster than you could believe. With at least 25 construction workers visiting the space a day and unseasonably good weather, Pro Literacy's space in the Case Supply Building will be complete and open at the end of May. And the only thing bigger than this massive project is the potential of what it will be. "Our staff will be more directly involved with the people we ultimately serve," says Mark Cass, Vice President of Community Engagement for ProLiteracy. "We believe it's going to change the quality and depth of what we do." There are more than 1,100 member organizations of ProLiteracy across the country, and this will be the first one that will be actively engaged with the community. This all began after ProLiteracy reexamined its mission and decided to reinvent the organization. They decided that the best way to improve adult literacy was through a community oriented approach, and focused specifically on central New York. They began the Ruth J. Colvin Center for Innovation and Excellence in Adult Literacyand this new space will be its home.

Caroles Corner: Spring Clean-Up!

By Carole Horan Do you think about cleaning when Spring comes? I remember so clearly when I was younger how my mother would start tearing the house apart and do that deep cleaning that Spring seems to require at least to her!! I cant say that as a teenager I enjoyed being part of that. And even now as an adult I cant say that cleaning is my favorite thing to do. But ..... it does seem to be a necessary chore. Besides cleaning in the house, sorting, throwing out, re-organizing, sprucing up and other such things I always look to the outdoors. After a winter in Central New York we usually have layers of debris that becomes noticeable after the snow begins melting. For whatever reason, so many people feel that our world is their wastebasket. Well, this year as I look around my immediate neighborhood it seems different. There is not quite as much littler and garbage laying around; I wonder if it is because we have been able to keep on top of it throughout the winter because of the lack of snow and miserable weather. But there is still a need to pick up and clean our surroundings. Dont we all feel better when it looks better?! When I was reading my newspaper this morning I found an offer of free litter tongs from a generous man in the Syracuse area. I called him and he gave me permission to reprint his offer. If you want a free pair of litter tongs to clean your neighborhood you may call: Dennis McGraw 315-476-2200 He will give you free litter tongs, on a first come, first serve basis. All he asks is that you choose an area in your neighborhood and keep it clean. Just imagine if everybody did that! Syracuse would look awesome! You all know how I love quotes. Well, today Im going to close with one that I found on my calendar for March: Let everyone sweep in front of his own door, and the whole world would be clean. von Goethe Im going out right now and see if theres anything I need to pick up!

ProLiteracy Space in CASE Building Nears Completion

continued... ProLiteracy worked directly with local architectural firm King&King to make sure the space reflected the new vision of ProLiteracy, as well as the needs of the community. There will be large glass doors that invite community members to come in and will act as a way to transition from the Near Westside to downtown. Once you get inside, there is an airy lobby that is open to the public to come in, sit down, and read something. The lobby will feature a 1.5 story bookcase that will act as a library of materials. Many of the readings will be from New Readers Press, ProLiteracys publishing division. ProLiteracy also hopes to work with Little Free Libraries and other organizations to fill the bookcases with more. There will be a circulation desk, where a staff member can help you find books, access computers and provide help/information. The space will also feature a common caf space for special events, or for getting a cup of coffee. If you walk past the lobby, youll enter a workstation, which will feature 18 computers that are- you guessed it, free and open to the public. They will run Windows 7, a common operating platform, and they will feature many instructional software programs. People can come and use these computers by themselves, ask for assistance from one of ProLiteracys staff, or view the provided instructional materials. A third space will act as a training area for ProLiteracy and any other community organizations who want to use it. The room is actually two rooms with a moveable wall that can seat about 90 people in total. Classes, conferences, or events can occur in this space. ProLiteracy will alter and change this space based on the needs of the community. Do you need to learn how to get a GED or help filling out a FAFSA? ProLIteracy will find a way to teach it to you- for free. The only way that ProLiteracy will accomplish these goals is through using the resources of the community. Were looking at lots of opportunities for partnership, notes Katie Schisa, director of Life Links, the digital literacy initiative of the Colvin Center. There are a lot of great resources in this community and were hoping that this space will really be the center of those resources. And while much is still up in the air, the potential is there. ProLiteracy has begun partnerships with organizations such as the Westside Residents Coalition, the Literacy Coalition, Home Headquarters and Say Yes to Education. They are keeping the needs of the community in mind, and structuring their new programs and actions based on those needs. Oftentimes, people know what they need, but they dont have the resources to get it, Cass explains. With this space, we are trying to make things as accessible as possible.

Green Train Takes Root on the Near West Side

By Francesca Merwin, NWSI Staff Writer Green Train graduates were Near West Side residents: Los residentes graduados del Tren Verde del Westside son residents: Muther Abdal Kareem Walvis Acosta Joseph Cisasayi Badiambile Antoan Brantley Richard Graham Twan Graham Willis Green Anthony Kearse Bhasker Khatiwoda Robert McAlpine Derrick McAster Pedro Robles Shella Soavelo Jesus Torres Rosa and Mark Westbrook. Three years ago, almost to the day, Green Train graduated its first class of North Side residents. The community was skeptical. They werent sure what this program was or what the people were trying to accomplish. But now, according to Green Train cofounder and founder of Northside Urban Partnership (Northside UP), residents are finally taking notice. Weve been in the process of proving ourselves, he says. Any community that has been promised a lot but hasnt seen a lot delivered is naturally wary. Luckily for the Northside, the program delivered. Green Train was the pilot program for a workforce development model that was created by Northside UP, the Near Westside Initiative, Centerstate CEO and SUNY-ESF. The program is a 12-week educational boot camp that teaches environmentally friendly job skills to local residents. So far, they have a 90% graduation rate and then a 90% placement rate post graduationnumbers that speak volumes about the programs success. And now, the program has come over to the West Side to similarly impressive results. Green Train recently graduated 15 residents from the Near West Side, ranging in age from 21-50. It wasnt easy getting started in this area, but the organization used its resources to form a partnership with Habitat for Humanity. When we started on the North Side, we tapped into our networks to see who needed help and people would just naturally come forward, Robinson explains. Over here, we were able to form a partnership with the Near West Side Initiative, and then they coordinated with Habitat. The current class of Green Train graduates built two sheds for Habitat for Humanity homes on Fitch Street. These homes are actually a first for Habitat for Humanity, because they are the first houses for disabled veterans. These homes are also the first in the country that have used a HUD-VASH Program voucher for home buying instead of renting.

I think its a wonderful opportunity for collaboration, says Suzanne Williams, executive director of Syracuses Habitat for Humanity. We have a wonderful workshop right below our offices and before Green Train came along, that space was dormant. Indeed, there is a giant storage space and workshop area underneath Habitat for Humanitys offices on Otisco Street, which now acts as one of the home bases for Green Train workers on the Near West Side (They also operate out of the West Side Learning Center). The Green Train program will continue to build on the Northside, West Side, and in other places throughout Syracuse through collaborations with residents and organizations. There will be another Green Train program for Near West Side residents in the spring, and Robinson is also working on a pilot health training program on the Northside. He hopes that a successful run of this program will have implications for other neighborhoods in Syracuse as well. Its difficult to live in poverty and have aspirations and not have access, Robinson concludes. Theres a natural callous for communities like that. It challenges people like me- well meaning white folk- to be serious about what were trying to do. Its not just talkWere really going to achieve something here.

Signature Nourishes Music Students

By Francesca Merwin, NWSI Staff Writer The Near West Side/SALT District is an incubator for artists of all media poetry, ceramics, design, music and more. But how does one become an artist? Is it there at birth, or does it bubble up as a youngster is exposed to the world? Dick Ford, executive director of Signature Syracuse, located in the Delavan Center, believes that however artistry lands in someones soul, hes prepared to nurture that souls love of music, especially for those youngsters with talent and drive who dont have traditional channels for music education and performance that others might have. Signature Syracuse has made quality music instruction accessible to low-income urban youth by providing free music education opportunities for over 150 under-served youth since 2000. Signature has created a model urban music program through free private lessons, loan of instruments, community performance opportunities and college guidance. West side students representing Corcoran High School and the West Side Academy at Blodgett are part of this years program. Our long-term objective is to increase the number of minority youth who continue participation in music throughout high school and college, said Dr. Ford. This program enables students to pursue degrees in music so they can become employed in music education, performance and/or the music industry. Signature provides performance opportunities to help students acquire professional experience to boost their self-esteem as valued members of the community. Many talented singers and instrumentalists do not qualify for college music programs because they lack private lessons, Dr. Ford continued. Signature prepares urban students for college auditions. Their lessons emphasize sight-reading, technical competence, and learning how to practice so their time is well spent. Were so proud that 25 former Signature students have studied music in college, and several are currently public school music teachers, Dr. Ford added.

Scrapping a Growing Concern in the Neighborhood

By Sean Cotter When one thinks of the main crime concerns in Syracuse, thefts from abandoned houses may not come to mind. But the problem is a growing concern for the Syracuse Police Department. Its huge, said Lt. Richard Shoff of the police departments Community Policing Division. Its probably one of the top two or three issues the police department is looking at. Thieves break into abandoned homes to steal scrap metal and anything else they can sell easily. Because the more than $3 a pound it commands at scrapyards, copper from pipes and wire is a favorite target. Often, people looking to steal from abandoned homes show up in a van, pretending theyre workers hired to fix up the home, Shoff said. Some even go up to neighbors and let them know theyre there, so the operation seems more legitimate, he said. If this happens, the best way to see if the workers are indeed legitimate is to ask for a permit or to look for one displayed in the window of the house in question, Shoff said. He said if one isnt given or evident, someone should call police. Shoff said this type of crime isnt limited to scrap metal furniture, water heaters and anything else that is easy to take away are also targets. In the Near Westside, West Onondaga Street and Bellevue Street near Bradley Street is the area thats been hit hardest. He said one of the Syracuse Police Departments strategies is to identify vacant properties and to track down the properties owners. The police want owners to submit a trespass notice, which gives the police permission to arrest anybody found on the property without having to consult the owner first, Shoff said. This has worked in stopping burglaries of abandoned homes, to an extent. Instances of this crime were up significantly in the past two or three years as the price of metal rose, but have dropped off gradually in the past few months, Shoff said. It seems to be driven down, but not eliminated, Shoff said. Shoff said the key to reducing such thefts, which devalue the abandoned property and the surrounding neighborhood, is cooperation with local scrap yards. If thieves cant sell the metals, they may think twice about stealing. At present, the state requires photo ID and an itemized list of whats brought to a scrap yard for deals exceeding $50. For smaller deals, checking identities and itemizing is left up to scrap yard owners. There are three scrap yards in the Syracuse city limits Bodow Recycling, Syracuse Materials Recovery and Roth Steel. There are a handful of others in the surrounding area. Steve Palmere, the plant manager at Bodow Recycling, said he is open to working with police. He follows the law and documents all deals over $50, but not those of lower value. He also requires photo identification for the deals of over $50. He said police are welcome to look at his database at any time. But he doesnt think this is the most effective way to cut down on this type of crime. continued on pg 7 The Near Westside Inisider - April 2011 www.saltdistrict.com

continued... Youre not going to take the profit out of scrapping, Palmere said. He said the only way to truly deter people would be to increase the punishments for people caught stealing and selling scrap metal. He said the consequences as they are right now arent nearly harsh enough. David Levitt, a project manager for Empire Recycle Corporation, the parent company of Syracuse Materials Recovery, said his company requires any seller to provide photo identification, regardless of the price of the deal. They also keep a database of all deals theyve made. He said he thinks his companys policies cut down on the amount of scrap metal people try to sell them. While he agrees with Palmere that people are always going to be able to find a place to sell scrap metal no matter what the scrap yards do, he thinks the yards have the ability to influence these types of crimes. In the end, it all comes down to the principles of supply and demand. Said Levitt: If they know they cant just pull up and cash in, that stops some people.

At First Glance, Lipe Art Park Seems Disorderly and Forgotten

By Shaun Janis An unfinished mural on a large concrete wall greets passing motorists. Planters and flower beds lay dormant. A discarded kayak rests in the grass. Plastic pipes of various lengths and sizes stand neatly and upright against a wire fence. The two-acre park, on West Fayette Street near the South Geddes Street underpass, will spring to life again soon, said Maarten Jacobs, a member of the group that runs the park, and the director of the Near Westside Initiative. Jacobs said April will be an exciting month. The mural should be finished, Syracuse University design students will install a temporary art piece and, if the weather permits, volunteers will begin to plant in the garden that donates produce to local food pantries. Jacobs said the park, which is a mix between green space and an art gallery, is the first of its kind in the city. It does not look like a traditional park, and it does not have basketball courts or a playground. The park opened six years ago. A subgroup of the local non-profit 40 Below maintains it. Group members call themselves park stewards. Dennis Earle, a professor in SUs design department, is a park steward. He said the park is off to a solid start, but far from polished. He said the sites history and location a former railroad yard alongside a busy street are challenging. Earle said he had to install a plastic liner and truck in clean dirt before he started planting in the donation garden after tests revealed the soil was contaminated with arsenic and heavy metals, a legacy of the sites industrial past. This will be the gardens fourth season. The stewards donate the produce to pantries at St. Lucys Church and Assumption Church. Earle said the stewards are trying to make the park more welcoming and accessible to visitors. The long-term plan calls for more permanent plantings and structures. Earle said he hopes these functional improvements will increase artists and community members interest in the park. This space is dedicated to every creative thing that can happen performance art, sculpture, art of any type or duration, Earle said. Earle said he is looking forward to mid-April when SU students temporary art piece will be on display at the park. He said the students will construct simple structures to hang fabric, fibers, rope and yarn throughout the park. Its a big site, so were encouraging the students to think large-scale, he said.

A primera vista, Lipe Art Park parece desordenada y olvidada

Facebook: More News:
