The story of the human race is War. Except for brieand precarious interludes, there has never been peace inthe world.
The World Crisis
In war, which is an intense form of life, chance casts asideall veils and disguises and presents herself nakedly frommoment to moment as the direct arbiter over all persons andevents.
Thoughts and Adventures
War, which used to be cruel and magnificent, has now become cruel and squalid. In fact it has been completelyspoilt. It is all the fault of Democracy and Science.
My Early Life
War, disguise it as you may, is but a dirty, shoddy business,which only a fool would play at.
The Caged Lion
In war, the clouds never blow over; they gatherunceasingly and fall in thunderbolts.
The World Crisis
A single glass of champagne imparts a feeling of exhilaration. The nerves are braced; the imagination isagreeably stirred; the wits become more nimble. A bottle produces a contrary effect. Excess causes a comatoseinsensibility. So it is with war; and the quality of both is best discovered by sipping.
