A special acknowledgement to Ron Cuccia, Charles Neville and Ramsey McLean,
who wrote the song My Darlin New Orleans, after which this event is named.
Its our hope that this, the third annual My Darlin New
Orleans fundraiser, will not be the culminating event in this
campaign. Weve all put down chips on a fourth season of
Treme, which would allow for a corresponding fourth event
or oera|l ol lre c|ly's cu|lura| ror-prolls. 3o rere's rop|rg

television drama can complete its story arc.
But in television, fools plan and networks decide, and just
in case, if you are here tonight and reading this, you might
want to bid on the available items with a little more abandon
than in previous years. Because while there may be one more
installment in Tremeand one more chance to appear as a
featured extra on the show, or to have your name uttered by
one of our characters, or to secure any of the unique swag on
display here tonightwe cant honestly say for certain.
The future, as they say, might be right now and only right
now.
For our part, this opportunity to give something back to
the New Orleans music community is as much a part of the
Treme dynamic as the drama itself. Yes, our primary purpose
is to broadcast a television narrative based on post-Katrina
New Orleans. Yes, we are writers and actors, technicians and
d|reclors ard creW reroers lrsl. Ard yes, We are rere lo le||
a story as best we can. Job One is exactly that.
But along the way, it has been our great delight to interact
with this city and to collaborate with its musical community in
a prolonged and dynamic way. We have had great fun making
this show. And we have been privileged to learn a great deal
about New Orleans and its musical heritage. The cooperation
and creativity that New Orleans and its musical artists and
supporters have offered us over the last three seasons of
l|r|rg a|rosl derard a correspord|rg g|ll-|r-||rd lror lrose
who have labored on Treme.
lr lral ||grl, our Wor| or oera|l ol lre ror-prolls lral re|p
to sustain the musical culture is more than lagniappe at this
point. It is the rightful payback to a musical community that
has helped sustain and enhance this show, episode after epi-
sode, season after season. What they have given has helped
us to use the unlikely medium of television to approximate
some of the cultural and musical power of an extraordinary
city.
We are grateful. And we are aware of one last, inevitable
truth:
Years from now, say, a decade hence, its certain that no
matter how well we tell our story, and no matter how many
people we reach with Treme, this production will be at best a
memory for New Orleans. Three seasons, or fourTreme will
be broadcast, then seen in digital downloads or DVDs, and
then, after a time, there will be other stories that follow. Actors
and directors will begin new projects; the writers, too. Our
talented crew will move on to fresh productions here and else-
where, and time itself will consign Treme to the past tense.
Thirty or forty hours of television is a good long time to
tell a story, and we hope to do the best we can with the tale.
We hope, too, that people will discover our dramaand, by
extension, New Orleans and her musical communityfor
some time to come. But comes a day when this story fades
from easy memory, the city itselfand what New Orleans has
given the worldwill still be alive and essential and deserv-
ing.
The New Orleans Musicians Clinic will still be providing
healthcare for musicians and tradition bearers, providing
primary medical assistance to more than 2,000 patients
citywide. The Roots of Music will still be creating a musical
alternative to the violence and instability of life in the citys
struggling communities, teaching music to more than 100
students and grounding them in the traditions. And Sweet
Home New Orleans will still be working to stabilize and sus-
tain musicians, Mardi Gras Indians and Social Aid & Pleasure
Club members so that they remain the cornerstone of the
citys unique culture.
These things will endure long after Treme. As much as
any story we can tell, our ability to draw attention to the citys
musical heritage and to support that heritage may be our
real chance at a lasting legacy. Through our fundraising for
ror-prolls, lrrougr lre erp|oyrerl ol rus|c|ars ard cu|lure
bearers, and through the purchase and use of local music,
we just might matter a bit more than a television show has
any right to expect. In the end, we hope that Treme helps
rore peop|e lrd NeW 0r|ears ard |ls g|or|es. 8ul We a|so
hope that nights like this one help to sustain those glories so
that they might be found.
So bid with your hearts. Spend senselessly. Go to excess.
Overdo it. This is New Orleans, after all.
