Dave Lunsford, a Vietnam veteran, served as a sergeant in theArmy from 1965 to 1967. He has been the Commander of theAmerican Legion Post #991 in Worth, Illinois, forfive years. Because of this position and his servicehistory, Dave has a tremendous respect for ourcountry’s veterans. When the
Southtown Star
newspaper decided to devote a 24-page specialedition section to the pictures and stories of WorldWar II veterans for Veterans Day 2010, Davestepped up to the plate. He and his Post organizedthe huge undertaking. The six-month project began in April 2010,when Dave found the names and addresses of approximately 180 WWII veterans. He and hiswife, Loretta, sent out letters requesting that thevets come for photographs and interviews. Theinterview process took place for two days in June at the AmericanLegion Post in Worth. Dave was instrumental in organizing theprocess of registering, interviewing, and photo-graphing the vets for the newspaper. A total of 108WWII veterans showed up to share their storiesand a bit of their personal histories.Dave said that he “laughed and cried withthe stories.” He said that it was an emotionalexperience that was well worth the long, unpaidhours he devoted to it. With veterans who servedin World War II being in their 80s and 90s, there isthe fear that their stories will be lost forever if notshared with others now. Dave was happy to helpto deliver their words to others, “It was a pleasureto do it.”

The
Marszalek
family,
David, Nanette, Ashley,
and
Cody,
have been patients at College DriveDental for many years. They were at the office for dental appointments recently and shared the amazingmiracle that took place in their lives. Dave received a living-donor liver transplant on August 26, 2010.The donor was daughter Ashley! In September 2009, Dave was diagnosed with cancer of the bile ducts and primary sclerosingcholangitis, the same liver disease that Walter Payton suffered from. The cure for Dave was thedonation of 65 percent of his daughter’s liver. At the time of the surgery, Ashley was 22 years old and a student at Florida Gulf Coast University.Although several people were willing to be tested as a donor, Ashley was a perfect match for her fatherand was happy to undergo the risky surgery. In living donor surgery, a portion of a healthy person’sliver is transplanted into a person with a diseased liver. The organ regenerates itself in both the donor andthe recipient. In Ashley’s case, her liver has regenerated 100 percent, and she is back tonormal activities. Since the surgery, she has gone camping in the Everglades with a75-pound backpack and has ridden her bike across the state of Florida with a groupfrom school. She graduated on May 1 with a degree in environmental sciences andstudies.Dave and Nanette were at the graduation ceremony in Florida. Dave is healthyand has been doing some traveling. He plans to enjoy the summer before goingback to work in September. He is looking forward to going boating, which hewasn’t able to do last year. Dave says, “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t forAshley.” He is thankful for his life, and thankful for his daughter’s precious gift.
