Intensivelanguagecoursesmeetinlectureanddiscussiontwiceaday,fourdaysa week(exceptforJapanese,whichmeetsfivedaysaweek).Thelanguageprogramshavelanguagelunchtables,coffeehours,andothersocialevents.Thelanguageteachersareavailableforcounselingandadditionalhelp.Ifastudentbeginsanewlanguage,proficiencyisusuallyattainedinoneyearthroughtheResidentialCollegeprogram.

(Goertz/Shier)IntensiveGermanIcoversthefirstyearofGermanlanguagestudyinonesemester.Thegoalofthiscourseistoprovidestudentswithabasicbutsolidknowledgeofgrammaticalstructuresandsyntax,afunctionalvocabulary,familiaritywithintonationpatternsandnativepronunciation,andpracticeinspeakingandwriting.AttheendofGermanIntensiveI,studentscanunderstandauthenticandliterarytextsappropriatetothelevelandshortspokenpassageswithoutglossedvocabulary,theycanwriteanessayorshortstorywithouttheaidofadictionary,andtheycanconverseonarangeofgeneraltopics.Thiscourse,likeallRCGermanlanguagecourses,isconductedinGerman,sostudentsquicklybecomeaccustomedtousingGermanfordailyactivities.StudentsinRCLang191havemanyopportunitiestogainfacilitywiththelanguagebyspeakingwithmoreadvancedlearnersandteachersintheprogramininformalsettings,suchasRCGermanlunchtablesandcoffeehours.Inaddition,theyareintroducedtowebactivitiesandfilmstohelpthemexploreaspectsofGermanlanguageandculture.RCLang191intheFallsemesterisintendedforstudentswhohavehadHSGerman,whoplacebelowthesecond‐yearlevel.IntheWintersemester,thecourseisgearedtostudentswhohavelittleornopriorexposuretothelanguage.

(López‐Cotin)ThegoalofthiscourseistoprovidestudentswithabasicbutcomprehensiveknowledgeofSpanishmorphologyandsyntax,functionalvocabulary,andpracticeinspeakingandwriting.ThelecturegivesathoroughintroductiontoSpanishgrammaticalstructuresasusedinculturalcontexts.Studentsalsomeetinsmalldailydiscussiongroupsforintensivepracticeofthematerial.Uponcompletionofthiscoursestudentsareabletounderstandnon‐editedjournalistictextsandoralpassagesofmediumlengthwithouttheaidofadictionary,andcanalsoinitiateandsustainageneralconversationwithanativespeaker.Inallormostlinguisticareas,studentsmayachievetheequivalentofintermediatetointermediate‐highratingintheACTFLscale.

(Goertz/Paslick)IntensiveGermanIIcoversallofsecond‐yearGermaninonesemester.Thegoalsofthecoursearetoexpandvocabulary,toimprovecommunicationskills,andtomastergrammaticalstructuresandsyntaxtothelevelofcompetencythatmeetsadvancedintermediatestandardsforproficiency.Onehourofclassdevelopsessaywritingandoralcommunicationskills,focusingonautobiographicalandliterarytextsaboutthemajoreventsin20thand21stCenturyGermanculturalhistory.Thesecondhourisdevotedtoindepthstudyandpracticeofgrammar;itisaimedatdevelopingstudents'abilitytoapplycorrectformsandsyntaxandbeawareofstylisticnuancesevenwhenusingthelanguagespontaneously.Throughengagementwithcoursematerials,includingfilmsandothervisualandperformancetexts,andthroughinteractionwithteachersandclassmatesbothinformalandinformalcontexts,studentsdevelopspeaking,auralcomprehension,andwritingskills.Bytheendoftheterm,studentsareabletounderstandthecontentoftextsandlecturesofanon‐technicalnatureandofgeneralinterest,andtocommunicatewithsomeeasewithanativespeaker,inspokenandwrittenlanguage.Thoughtrainingforstudyabroadorworkabroadarenotcourseobjectives,perse,studentsareoftenwellqualifiedtodoeitheraftercompletionofthiscourse.
