No, I’m not exaggerating. The Americanexperiment in religious liberty is officiallyover. The First Amendment providedinstitutional structures that allow differentreligions to peacefully coexist. All groupsagree to
try to capture governmentalstructures for the benefit of their own particular denomination. But the Obama administration has endedthattruce. The administration made adecision to require all employers to providecontraception, abortion-inducing drugs andsterilization. The administration offers noreligious exemption for people who have theaudacity to believe that pregnancy is not anillness that needs to be always andeverywhere prevented. In effect, we have a new state religion, anew Established Church of the United Statesof America, with Barack Obama as its head.It is the religion of Secular Hedonism, theworldview that sex is a sterile recreationalactivity, with babies thrown in as anafterthought, an optional extra, for peoplewith quirky life-style preferences. Thecontraceptive mandate uses the full might of the US government to scrub the publicsquare clean of any competing religiousvoices that dissent from the new orthodoxy. But because this worldview isfundamentally irrational, it cannot stand onits own two feet. Some sexual activity doesresult in babies. Not everyone wants their government acting as if the highest goal isthat pleasure is to be sought. Not everyone believes that the purpose of the governmentis to allow people to indulge themselvessexually, without a live baby ever resulting. The Catholic Church for instance, famouslyopposes every precept of Secular Hedonism. As a matter of fact, so did all of the Christian churches, right up until fiveminutes ago. The ancient Christian teachingis that marriage is the proper context for sexual activity and for child-bearing, for thegood of children, women, and men alike, aswell as society as a whole. The government believes that this dissentingvoice cannot be tolerated. It must becrushed. And, of course, from their point of view, they are perfectly correct. They havean established religion that says that everysexual act is intrinsically meaningless exceptfor the meaning we might happen to assignit. They simply can’t allow someone to goaround saying that each and every sexual actis sacred, and endowed by our Creator withinalienable significance. From the point of view of Secular Hedonism, Catholicismmust be crushed. And of course, anyone else who dissentsfrom the new orthodoxy must be crushed as
