Currenty the popuation o the Midde Eastand North Arica (MENA) region exceeds 432miion peope in 2007, ha o them chidrenand youth under 24 years o age. The regionhas the youngest popuation o any regionin the word, and the second highest urban-ization rate with an annua urban growthrate o 4% in the past two decades, secondony to Sub-Saharan Arica. Over ha thepopuations o Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia,and Iraq are under 25 years od, whie over60 percent o Pakistan and Aghanistan’spopuations are under 25 years od. Overthe ast ew decades, schoo enroment rateshave risen markedy throughout the regionor both young men and women. Yet, therecenty reeased Arab Human DeveopmentReport nds that youth unempoymentpresents the biggest chaenge to a Arabcountries, which have neary doube thegoba rate. A projected 51 miion new jobswi have to be created by 2020 to absorbyouth into the abor orce. Unempoymentaso oten aects women more than men,with unempoyment rates or Arab womenbeing higher than those or Arab men, andamong the highest in the word. Data rom2005 shows that the youth unempoymentrate or men was 25 percent compared to31.2 per cent or women. In the region, theemae youth unempoyment went rom ahigh o approximatey 59 per cent in Jordan,compared to 35 per cent or maes, to a owo 5.7 per cent in UAE, compared to a maeunempoyment rate o 6.4 per cent.
