SIX TIPS ON A TAX CREDIT FOR RETIREMENT SAVINGS
If you make eligible contributions to an employer-sponsored retirement plan or to an individual
retirement arrangement, you may be eligible for a tax credit, depending on your age and income.
Here are six things the IRS wants you to know about the Savers Credit:
1. Income limits The Savers Credit, formally known as the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit, applies to
individuals with a ling status and 2011 income of:
Single, married ling separately, or qualifying widow(er), with income up to $28,250
Head of Household with income up to $42,375
Married Filing Jointly, with incomes up to $56,500
2. Eligibility requirements To be eligible for the credit you must be at least 18 years of age, you cannot have been
a full-time student during the calendar year and cannot be claimed as a dependent on another persons return.
3. Credit amount If you make eligible contributions to a qualied IRA, 401(k) and certain other retirement plans,
you may be able to take a credit of up to $1,000 ($2,000 if ling jointly). The credit is a percentage of the qualify-
ing contribution amount, with the highest rate for taxpayers with the least income.
4. Distributions When guring this credit, you generally must subtract distributions you received from your retire-
ment plans from the contributions you made. This rule applies to distributions received in the two years before
the year the credit is claimed, the year the credit is claimed, and the period after the end of the credit year but
before the due date - including extensions - for ling the return for the credit year.
5. Other tax benets The Retirement Savings Contributions Credit is in addition to other tax benets you may
receive for retirement contributions. For example, most workers at these income levels may deduct all or part
of their contributions to a traditional IRA. Contributions to a regular 401(k) plan are not subject to income tax
until withdrawn from the plan.
6. Forms to use To claim the credit use Form 8880, Credit for Qualied Retirement Savings Contributions.
For more information, review IRS Publication 590, Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs), Publication
4703, Retirement Savings Contributions Credit, and Form 8880. Publications and forms can be downloaded at
www.irs.gov or ordered by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Fritz Erickson and I were talking, and
in our academic careers we have never
worked at a university where the faculty
is so innovative in making changes to the
curriculum, Eisler told the board. The
action you have just taken validates that.
A committee from the Academic Senate
meets twice a week for 10 weeks to
review any proposed curriculum changes
before presenting degree changes to the
board.
Also at the meeting, the board approved
a change in the student housing policy
that would give the president, or his
designee, the authority to update the
policy without bringing it before the whole
board. The part of the policy that requires
students under the age of 20 to live on
campus was removed, and the policy
now states that administrators will decide
on-campus housing requirements.
Specics of those requirements were not
discussed.
Eisler said enrollment predictions for
the upcoming school year are positive.
However, he expects summer enrollment
to decline because Pell grants can no
longer be used on summer courses.
In other business, the board:
n Granted up to $300,000 to be spent
on the planning stage of developing a
new University Center. The visioning
stage is complete, and the next step is
to make preconstruction plans and hire
a design and consulting rm. Demolition
of Masselink and Carlisle halls, which
surround the site of the University
Center, will be postponed until summer
2013;
n Revised contracts with several of
Ferris charter schools;
n Extended its contract for a marketing
campaign until July 11, which cost an
additional $50,000; and
n Approved a wellness program for
faculty and staff.
The board went into an informal closed
session at the end of the meeting. It will
meet again on July 11.

DAIRY DELIVERS NUTRIENT-
RICH HOLIDAY FLAVOR
(NewsUSA) - The holidays dont
intuitively seem like a good time to worry
about healthy eating, but there are
tasty ways to get your necessary intake
of vitamins and nutrients. Dairy is an
ideal example of a delicious but often
overlooked source of essential nutrients
-- making it a great ingredient for holiday
cooking.
Even when were not celebrating the
holidays, most Americans consume too
many foods that are high in calories
but low in nutrients, says Alyssa
Greenstein, a registered dietitian with
the Dairy Council of Florida. One way
to lighten holiday fare is to focus on
serving nutrient-rich choices from the
food groups people need most. Those
food groups are low-fat and fat-free
dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole
grains.
Research shows that the average holiday
meal with all the trimmings contains as
many as 3,000 calories with 225 grams
of fat. This can quickly add unwanted
pounds -- studies show that the average
American typically gains one to two
pounds during the holidays.
Science shows that consuming at least
three servings of milk, cheese or yogurt
every day helps people meet their daily
calcium, potassium and other nutrient
recommendations and may help reduce
the risk of chronic diseases such as
osteoporosis, hypertension and obesity.
During holiday cooking, substitute low-fat
dairy options to get the same vitamins
with fewer calories. Consider options like
low-fat or fat-free cheese, low-fat or skim
milk and fat-free plain Greek yogurt.
Even people with lactose intolerance do
not have to miss out on the enjoyment
of dairy foods during the holidays or the
essential nutrients that dairy provides all
year long, says Greenstein. Lactose-
free milk is real milk with the lactose (or
sugar) removed. It contains the same
nine essential nutrients as regular milk,
including calcium, protein and vitamin D.
Dont sacrice good taste to be healthy
this season. Try this holiday recipe with
your friends and family for a nutrient-rich
beverage:
Vanilla Egg Nog
3 eggs (or 3/4 cup pasteurized egg
product)
1/3 cup sugar
4 cups low-fat milk
1 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt
Whole nutmeg, grated
In a blender, mix eggs and sugar. Add
milk, yogurt, vanilla and salt; blend until
frothy. Pour into serving glasses, and
garnish with freshly grated nutmeg. Get

DISCOVER A BETTER RIDE ON
WET ROADS
(NewsUSA) - Bald or poorly maintained
tires wont get you very far when it comes
to driving on slippery roadways. With
improper equipment and maintenance,
slick surfaces from rain storms are a
major threat to safety on the road.
Take control by following this advice from
your friends at Firestone Complete Auto
Care on ways to prepare yourself and
your vehicle for possible wet weather.
* During wet weather conditions, drive
slowly and keep in mind that stopping
distances will be longer than usual.
Stopping on a wet road can take up to
four times the stopping distance of a dry
road.
* Rainwater that mixes with oil or
grime on the streets can cause slippery
conditions that may result in unexpected
skidding.
* Drive smoothly. To maintain control
of your vehicle, try to avoid jerky, abrupt
movements when braking, accelerating
or turning.
* Check your tires at least once a
month. This includes proper rotation,
ination, repair and replacement.
* In many areas of the country, the
snow and ice of winter leave roads in
bad shape. Hitting a pothole can damage
your tire and/or the wheel of your vehicle.
The sharp impact can cause immediate
tire or wheel failure or internal damage
that can lead to tire failure weeks later.
Keeping your tires properly inated will
help reduce pothole damage and other
road hazards. Heres an extra tip about
potholes:
* If you do have to hit a pothole, avoid
braking during the impact. Instead,
attempt to brake before impact and
release just prior to contacting the
pothole. Braking during impact sets up
the tire and wheel assembly for a solid
hit against the edge of the hole. Less
severe damage occurs when a tire is
rolling, rather than skidding, over the
pothole.
Save yourself money on expensive
repairs by following these tips to help
keep your vehicle running in tip-top
shape.

3 TOOLS EVERY SMALL
BUSINESS SHOULD USE
(NewsUSA) - With regards to technology,
small businesses and entrepreneurs
working out of a home ofce used to
be at a competitive disadvantage. But
the abundance of productivity tools and
online resources for small businesses
has changed all that. Being small doesnt
have to look small -- now you can run
your business from beaches and terraces
of the world with just a cell phone or a
tablet.
Now, smartphones are practically ofce
computers in and of themselves, allowing
you to stay connected 33,000 feet up
in the air or stuck in gridlocked trafc.
Not surprisingly, a Small Business
Technology Poll taken by AT&T reports
a steady increase in the use of tablets,
4G devices and mobile apps for
business purposes. The next step for
the 85 percent of small businesses using
smartphones is utilizing the variety of
tools available online.
Here are three inexpensive resources
offered online that help small businesses
and the one-person team working from
home -- and your business shouldnt be
without them.
1. Virtual phone system. This system
allows companies of all sizes to have
a business-class virtual phone system
designed to help small and home-based
business owners build the same strong,
professional image as larger competitors.
It comes with toll-free numbers, Internet
fax, voice mailboxes and more.
2. Payroll software. Depending on the
size of your business, it may not be
pragmatic to have a full-time accountant,
and outsourcing can be pricey. But
payroll software can be optimized for
all payment methods, and accuracy is
based on a money-back guarantee.
Software of this nature tends to be very
user-friendly and extremely secure.
3. Email marketing software. Social
media marketing is all the rage right now,
but according to SmallBizTechnology.
com, email marketing software remains
more effective. An email marketing
software tool will track who opens, reads
and forwards your emails, design more
targeted newsletters, increase referrals
and get quicker results.
One last word of advice, which may
be the most crucial of all: Type
TestThis4Free.com into your browser
and bookmark it. The website is a one-
stop shop for online productivity tools,
including virtual phone systems, payroll
software, email marketing software and
more. The best part? It offers free trials
of various software and services to make
sure users will use and benet from a
tool before buying it.
With these tools offered for free online,
small businesses actually stand a
chance against large companies and big
budgets.
BUSINESS DOS AND DONTS
TO HELP YOUR STARTUP
SUCCEED
(NewsUSA) - Everyone has a dream
-- its the one thing they would rather
be doing more than anything else (and
are sure they could succeed at). Yet, its
something entirely different from what it

is they do to pay the bills.
What many fail to understand, however,
is that enthusiasm for a product or
service may not be enough to guarantee
success when starting a business.
So often, would-be entrepreneurs
believe they have that one idea that
will make them a millionaire, and in fact
it may be a very good idea, but what
they dont understand is that theres
so much more involved for a business
to succeed, says Heidi Ganahl, CEO
of Camp Bow Wow, a dog day care
franchise and boarding authority. The
business saw 20 percent year-over-year
growth last year in revenues across
Camps (individual franchise locations),
which opened pre-2011.
Unfortunately, Ganahl adds, passion
alone will not dictate or ensure
success.
To this end, the following dos and
donts may help you assess whether
your idea is ready:
* Do your research and prepare. So
often, failure comes from a lack of
preparation. According to Ganahls book
Tales From the Bark Side, every good
idea must come with the right support
to make it protable, including writing
a winning business proposal. Ganahl
says that lending or investing individuals
will only consider an investment after a
thorough review of your project.
* Dont go into business if youre not
committed. Convinced that they have
a good idea, but unprepared to be
completely committed, people will try
to have their feet in both the corporate
world and their new business venture. If
you feel the inability to put your all into
your new venture, cut your losses.
* Do ensure you have enough
capital. Business analysts report
that poor management is the main
reason for business failure and that
poor cash management is probably
the most frequent stumbling block for
entrepreneurs. Understanding the basic
ideas of cash ow will help you plan for
the unforeseen eventualities that face
nearly every small business.
* Do consider owning a franchise.
With thousands of systems operating
in dozens of industries, there is no
shortage of choices here for the would-
be entrepreneur.
The down side? The plethora of choices
can make that decision a challenge,
so be clear about what you want, what
youre willing to do and how much you
need to make. For more information
about franchise opportunities, visit www.
campbowwow.com/franchise.
TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE COMMUTE
(NewsUSA) - Spring is in the air.
The days are getting longer and the
temperatures are rising. Before you
know it, summer will be here along
with all the joys that come with it, like
summer vacations.
But before you dust off those suitcases
and head for the shore, you need to put
in some crucial hours at the ol 9 to 5
and really earn that relaxing getaway.
So, in the meantime, your friends at
Firestone Complete Auto Care would
like to leave you with some important
tips to help make your daily commute as
worry-free as possible.
* Put the cell phone down. Your car
is not a mobile ofce. Cell phones are
distracting. Designate your time in the
car as quiet time. If you must talk on
the phone, get a headset -- as now
required by many state laws -- so that
both your hands remain on the steering
wheel.
* Stay focused on driving to protect
yourself and others on the road. Trying
to multitask while driving is dangerous
for you and the other drivers on the
road.
* Make sure you can hear auditory
driving cues. Listening to the radio
loudly can drown out car horns,
emergency sirens and bicycle bells.
* Avoid taking your eyes off the road.
Turning around to talk to passengers
and ipping through radio channels can
cause you to steer out of your lane or
miss important visual cues.
* Check your tires often. Make sure
theyre properly inated, rotated and
otherwise in good condition. After all,
your tires are the only things between
your vehicle and the road.
* Make sure your car is in good
condition underneath the hood. Your
Firestone Complete Auto Care service
center can carry out your vehicles
scheduled maintenance and assist you
with any problems that come up in the
interim.
* Wear comfortable attire. Before
setting off, select a pair of comfortable
driving shoes, and remove inhibiting
layers.
* Make sure the drivers seat is
adjusted to a comfortable position. This
is especially important if you share the
car with family members. Dont forget
to check your mirrors and adjust them if
necessary!
Work can be stressful enough -- dont
add to the hassle by inviting distractions
behind the wheel. Keep your commute
stress-free, and youll nd that those
summer plans of yours will be here
before you know it. Safe travels!
