Last year (2007) our major inquiry unit in English was based around planning, developing, writing and publishing a digital picture book for a young person. Students used their knowledge gained in our Rocky Shore Science unit to integrate into ideas for their story and characters. This year we did the same inquiry as well as adding an extra element – making our picture books audio books using the Marvin programme in order to enhance oral language skills.
They are learning and discovering yet another valuable ICT tool, and at the same time would be enhancing their oral language skills. I have found that members of the class are often not confident speaking in front of the class whilst using expression and variety in their voice. Using Marvin allows them to experiment with this without being in front of an audience, and to change and edit as they go. The most imperative outcome of using Marvin in our picture books would be a growth in confidence in students oral language skills.
