What method is it based on?
Out There is based upon the Communicative Method, which most study abroad schools use around the world, but it uses a redesigned lesson plan format that is used in every single session.
This new format means that real practice of the target language happens minutes after the language has been taught.
However, the course is also Constructivist in nature and includes elements of psycholinguistic research and the application of practical memory enhancing techniques that lead to improved memory mapping.
All of this helps clients to remember the target language better and to feel much more confident.

There is still a lot of misunderstanding in the study abroad/TEFL community about our lessons. I think maybe that is because virtually all other schools and courses are based solely upon the communicative method and a lot of generic course books and materials are used that were designed for the global market and rely on methodology adopted in the 60s and 70s that does not take into account the psychological processes of information storage and retrieval, i.e. memory.
Our lessons are based upon constructivist and psycholinguistic principles so that each and every three hour session becomes an individual experience for each and every student and they end up with a unique story in their mind based upon the language they studied in the class and then immediately used with people they had never met before in a different interesting place each day.
The added element of having to perform (adrenaline) plus the sights, smells and sounds of where they go create a multi-sensory mind-map around the target language and thus create cognitive markers that when they need to use the language again enable them to recall one or more elements of the experience (whether they naturally use emotional, visual, olfactory or audio triggers, or more likely a combination, to link information together and retrieve it for repeated use).
There is also the likelihood that the immediate feeling of achievement that they get when they meet someone new and use new language with them successfully, or language they have revised but do not normally incorporate into their spoken communication, produces the secretion in the brain of a chemical called phenyethylamine which can be found in chocolate and is often associated with feelings of love. Of course it would be a very small dose in the case of our students but that feeling of success and achievement with a friendly stranger who has helped them and given them their time makes them feel good about themselves. That emotional response also contributes to the mind-map and the overall memorability of the whole experience.
These arent just the wild and fanciful thoughts of me and the team at Out There, Ive discussed what we do with some famous professors of linguistics and psycholinguistics and I thought the active agent might have been endorphins, but they suggested phenyethylamine, which kind of makes sense to us now!

Re: which level our lessons suit best You know, some people in our industry (and Im thinking about agents here) think it is best for higher levels (KUB in Serbia for example) and they send us English graduates from Belgrade University who are training to be English teachers. They think that the course turns passive knowledge into active knowledge based upon the premise that years of conventional study result in high abilities to read and write but that a lot of the language stored in the memory is not used to produce language when they speak, it has to be coaxed out as confidence increases and the user has to be less afraid of making mistakes. Once they have revised it and used it with someone they have never met before, it is easier to use again next time they need to use it.
This is very obvious with Far Eastern students who might have a high level of reading and writing but a low level of speaking and listening. Our conjecture as to why this happens is that the learners output filter (the psychological process that at worst makes you unable to speak or at best interferes slightly with your ability to speak fluently and naturally) is being lowered by the effect of our lessons.
Other agents think that the lessons are great for lower levels because they guide and support learners through the emotional jungle related to the fear of making mistakes and teach them that communication and not always accuracy, is the most important thing. So low levels lose their fear of speaking and become more experimental. They also get going with the basics, i.e. drilled and then used. It can be scary, but they get supported by the teacher and the other students whilst outside and the teacher becomes more a guide or facilitator. Think of our lessons as being the half-way point between the safe confines of the conventional classroom environment and the scary real world. We try to bridge the gap and help learners over their anxiety, because when anxiety reaches a certain level it can stop you from speaking.
So I would suggest that the lessons do slightly different things at different levels. Low levels get a quick way to get going with simple language and start communicating, high levels revise and use language they wouldnt normally use when speaking but already know how to write and read, plus they pick up a lot of natural new vocab across the board.

Before and After
Over the summer of 2006 we shot some video of students during their placement interviews and before they followed their EOT course in London. We then videoed them again during a similar interview, just before they left to go home. We call them our Before and After videos. Most students were on very short courses of between two to four weeks. Living in the UK particularly London is expensive compared to many places in the world. The cost of living will of course depend on the individual situation (and tastes!) of each of your clients, but they still need to be prepared financially

Q: What is the maximum, minimum, and average number of students in a class between Nov and April? A: Minimum 4, maximum 10. Q: How many students do you have at your school? A: Minimum 10, maximum. Q: How many levels does the course have? A: 6 when it is busy. Q: How long does it take you to process application forms i.e. issue the letter of acceptance, invoices? A: Normally 3 to 4 minutes. Q: Do you organise accommodation? A: Yes, we have prices that include accommodation. Look on our website or talk to your agent.
Question: What time do I have to report to the school on my first day? Answer: Before you come to London you should visit Meetup.com and our pages on the website. Q: Do students need to buy any textbooks? A: No, we use our own published materials developed and taught over eight years and published for teachers and learners on our website. Q: What kind of facilities does your school have? A: We teach out in the real world our admin is all done online. This enables us to keep costs low and pay teachers a good hourly rate. Terms and conditions

INSURANCE: Clients are advised to take out medical and personal insurance before leaving their home country. Moreover, clients are also advised to insure themselves against loss of fees through nonarrival, absence for any reasons, or unforeseen termination of their courses. BEHAVIOUR: Please note that we reserve the right to summarily cancel a voucher for any clients whose actions are deemed abusive or destructive, or whose actions are deemed likely to significantly increase the risk of injury to themselves or others.
CANCELLATIONS: Must be notified in writing by email as soon as possible. Refunds will only be issued to clients who cancel their voucher prior to using any of their credit and prior to the date that they intended to commence studying. Once a voucher has been activated and some credit used (i.e. one lesson has been taken) we cannot refund any of the value of the voucher. Vouchers are not transferable from person to person.
COURSE CHANGES: If a change of start date is required, the client must notify the school us as soon as possible.
VISAS: We are not accredited (because of the way we teach) and cannot support visa applications.
PUBLIC HOLIDAYS: No lessons will take place on public holidays unless individual teachers decide they want to do this. No refunds will be made for these days.
RESPONSIBILITY: The school is not liable for the loss of personal objects on the premises or the safety of clients during the lessons or whilst on any premises where a lesson is about to or is in fact underway. CLASS TIMES: Clients start times are decided by the teachers, the times can depend on the clients Language level. Most classes will start Out There and the location for the venues and directions can be found on Meetup.com. In the summer from July to August classes generally begin in the morning at either 9am or 10.30am and last 3 hours. There maybe other times available in the summer and even at weekends.
