There are several accessories you can buy to make your barbecue experience more fun and produce better food. Here’s a quick overview of some of my favoriteBig Green Eggaccessories. The Big Green Egg company makes several accessories, most of which I love, but I will only go over the ones that I use most often, or find the coolest.
The Plate Setter accessory is a ceramic heat deflector that allows you toturn your Big Green Egg grill into a smoker or oven. When you use thePlate Setter, you are essentially creating an indirect heat source (asopposed to the direct heat source of a normal grill) so your food cooksthrough convective and radiant heat (instead of conduction against thegrill surface). This method of cooking is best for slow smoking, so if youlike to smoke ribs (or similar meats) you will need something like a PlateSetter to create an indirect heat source. The Grid Extender is an attachment that goes on to your cooking surfaceand acts a “second floor.” Basically this nearly doubles your grilling space! This is an awesome little contraption that allows you to cook much morefood than normally possible on a Big Green Egg. One of the fewcomplaints I have about the Big Green Egg is the cooking surface is toosmall. Well that problem goes away with the Grid Extender. The Cast Iron Grid is a cooking surface that replaces your normal stainlesssteel grid. The Cast Iron Grid allows you sear steak, pork chops, and anyother meat more easily for an authentic restaurant style meal. Theadvantages of the Cast Iron Grid are its heat retention properties. Made of thick cast iron, the grid is slower to heat up but remains sizzling hot for along time (much like cast iron pans). The downside is that cast iron isheavy, and the Cast Iron Grid is no exception. Even so, if you enjoy a goodsteak you should think about picking up a Cast Iron Grid. The Sittin’ Chicken is a ceramic vertical chicken roaster with a space forcooking liquids (usually beer). This accessory is design specifically tomake a recipe called “Beer-Butt Chicken” where you fill the roaster withsome beer, then literally stick the ceramic roaster up the chicken’s butt. The result is a deliciously juicy and flavorful chicken with great color. Thisis a great accessory if you find yourself grilling chicken a lot. The Perforated Grid is a stainless steel grid with small perforations thatallow you to grill small items (like veggies or shrimp) without them fallingthrough the grates. The food will still get a nice grilled flavor, without theworry of the food dropping into the fire. You can get the Perforated Grid in“Half Moon” or “Full Moon” sizes. I like the Half Moon because it allowsyou to cook veggies on half the grill and your protein on the other half. The BBQGuru is a sophisticated electronic device that attaches to your BigGreen Egg intake and helps ignite your coals faster as well as regulatesthe temperature of your grill. In my opinion, this accessory is for “bbqnerds” (like myself!) who want a little extra technology in their lives. The
