CUPS Strategy

ELT PEDAGOGY

Mini Lesson: The CUPS Strategy for Editing 1. Model the process by looking at one aspect at a time. 2. Use a sample piece of writing and four different colours of editing pens to model the process. 3. Use BROWN to note any capitalization errors. 4. Then skim through the text again, marking errors in word usage (grammar, verb tense, pronouns referents, etc) with a GREEN coloured marker. 5. Go through the third time looking for missing or incorrect punctuation using an ORANGE marker.

6. The fourth time noting and fixing spelling errors with a RED marker.

reflection

Colours used for editing are interchangeable. Decide on the colours you want your students to use BUT do not attempt to change the colour code once you have decided. This will confuse the students and the technique will lose its effectiveness.

ELT PEDAGOGY

Workshop
In pairs, apply the CUPS Strategy to edit your revised composition. Use the colour codes to edit your work. You may use a students composition in Handout 22 if you have produced a perfect piece .

Feedback: The Four Traits

Research grades and comments on final drafts have little impact on improving students writing (Rog & Kropp, 2004). Answer: - provide specific comments during writing process when students still have an opportunity to do something with their writing. - student writing improves significantly when students are provided with clear criteria for success and opportunities to revise their work based on these criteria.

Rubric for Ideas & Content

Examines the overall theme of the piece of writing. - does it have a main idea? - does the writing include effective details that supports the main idea?

ELT PEDAGOGY

Rubric for Organization

Organization is about the logical and effective presentation of ideas and details. The organizational structure of a piece will depend on the purpose for writing; for example, a recipe is organized in a different way than a report. Teaching students about different genres and text forms will help them to organize their writing in ways that are appropriate to the topic and purpose.

Rubric for Word Choice

Refers to the language students use to express his or her ideas. Effective words are not just descriptive; they are precise. They are carefully chosen to convey the intended message clearly and create pictures in the readers mind. Engage students in reading that enriches their vocabularies and show how effective language can be.

Rubric for Conventions

Conventions are mechanics of writing; spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar. Students need to know the standard conventions of English for fear of having their ideas dismissed due to misspelled word or a misplaced comma. Mini-Lessons and individual conferences are the most effective way to teach conventions. Disconnected drills have little effect on real writing. Better to devise a focused lesson based on a specific needs of your students.
