The Honorable Gregory W. Slayton, Chairman

Respect for Fatherhood and the percentage of men who areactively involved Dads has declined steadily in the US over thepast 50 years
Our society now constantly celebrates the rich, the powerful, the
famous and the infamous…but never good fathers
Most popular media minimizes or actively puts down
Fatherhood (see the preponderance of “Doofus Dads” on TV)
The importance of Fathers, even the need for Fathers, is nowopenly called into question in certain American sub-cultures

As a direct result, many men now choose to skipFatherhood altogether, either by not marrying, nothaving kids or not parenting their kids
As a result of that, 41% of US births in 2010 were tosingle Moms (in 1960 that number was 4%). Thepercentage of children born to unmarried moms hasmore than doubled for each major racial group since1960. Over 70% of African American kids will be bornout of wedlock this year.
As a result of that, over 50% of the American childrenborn today will live some or most of their lives asminors without their fathers
