Century.6.TheKohKersiteisofgreatsignificancefromareligiousrhistoricalrandartisticperspective.FoundedandbuiltoveraperiodoftwodecadesbyJayavarmanIVrakingoftremendouswealthandpowerrtheKohKersiteisavastcomplexofsacredmonumentsmadeofbrickrlateriterorsandstonerincludingramongotherthingsrdozensoftemplesandsanctuaries,ahugeterracedpyramid-temple,andtowers.7.ThearchitectureandstatuaryofKohKerwereexecuted,underthedemandsofJayavarmanIV,bythefinestandmostexperiencedartisans,sculptors,andcraftsmenofthetime.KohKerstatuary,includingtheDefendantinrem,wasofakindandproportionthathadnotbeenpreviouslyattemptedinCambodia.Manyofthestatueswerehuge,oftenshowninmovement,andwerefree-standingorinhigh-relief,ratherthansimplyinbas-relief.
