On March 12, Dennis Elementarystudents watched as diggersstarted to move dirt behind their school and a new playgroundbegan to take shape. Whenstudents return from Spring Breakin April, they will be able to use thelong awaited new playgroundequipment. Today’s first graderswere just infants when parents andteachers started working towardthis project.Since Dennis Elementaryopened its doors in 2006, thePanther South PTO has worked tomake improvements to the outsidelearning and play spaces at theschool. A new shelter was erectedat the end of the last school year toprovide a place for outdoor lessonsand activities.Installing the new playgroundequipment is the second phase for outside improvements. Selectedwith input from teachers, staff,parents and students, theadditional equipment will serve allpopulations of Dennis’ first throughfifth graders.
 
The new playground equipmentwas approved by the Board of Education and then given to theschool district by the Panther South PTO. The new equipmentand ground surface is paid for through PTO-parent fundraisingand donations for the project fromWal-Mart, Springboro VisionCenter and Bounce U.

The Springboro High School ArtDepartment is pleased to announce that Jordan Freeman has earned a NationalGold Medal for her photography in the2012 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.The Scholastic Art and Writing Awardsare the nation’s largest and mostprestigious scholarship program forteenage artists and writers. Jordan’s workwas selected from over 200,000 entries bya panel of professional artists. Only thetop 1500 are recognized at the nationallevel. She has been invited to attend aceremony at Carnegie Hall and ParsonsNew School of Design in New York City,and her entry will go on a national tourfor the next year. Jordan is a senior in theDigital Media Arts Academy. She plans tostudy Visual Communications at SinclairCommunity College next year.

Samuel Johnson achieved second place in the VisualBasic Programming competition during the Ohioconference of the Business Professionals of America(BPA). In this information technology event,participants must demonstrate a workingknowledge of Visual Basic syntax, programminglogic, program development, system designconcepts, database, Visual Basic IDE Report Writers,designers and objects
.
BPA is the leading CareerTechnical Student Organization for studentspursuing careers in business management, officeadministration, information technology and otherrelated career fields. Now Samuel will go on torepresent Ohio and compete at the 2012 NationalBPA Conference in Chicago April 25 through 29.

THREE DENNIS STUDENTS AWARDEDFOR DESCRIPTIONS OF“MY HOME: THE AMERICAN DREAM”
Three Dennis Elementary students were recently honored fortheir writing and creativity in the Coldwell Banker HeritageRealtors “My Home: The American Dream” contest. Theannual contest awards a $500 check to the grand-prizewinner, and runners-up each receive $100. From nearly 400entries across the Dayton area this year, Lily Kennedy(below, right), a fourth grader in Mrs. Lisa Morrison’s class,won the grand prize. On March 19, Lily was awarded the$500 prize when representatives from Coldwell Bankersurprised her in her classroom. As the teacher of the grand-prize winner, Mrs. Morrison received a new digital camera aswell.In the same fourthgrade classroom,Hannah Centers(shown here on the left),was awarded $100in the secondthrough fourth gradegroup for her essaythat defined what herhome means to her. Just down the hall atDennis Elementary,Coldwell Bankerawarded Jacob Babb,a fifth grader in Mrs.Tricia Penn’s class, withthe $100 runner-up prizein the fifth and sixth grade category.The contest encourages children in grades two througheight to considerhow their homesfit into the visionof the “AmericanDream.”
