 ACKGROUND
TheCoachellaValleyHealthcareCrisis.
TheCoachellaValleyhasahealthcarecrisisduetothemagnitudeofinsufficienthealthcareaccessaswellasthedisparitiesinaccesstohealthcareexperiencedbydifferentcommunities.Thereisanalarmingshortageofhealthcareproviders,namelyprimarycarephysiciansintheregionandevenfewerwhoserveincommunitieswithhighratesofpoverty.Furthermore,thecurrenteconomiccrisisandrisingunemploymentrateshaveleftmanyresidentswithouthealthinsuranceandunabletoaffordbasicandneededhealthcare.ThedegreeofpovertyandlackofhealthcareservicesmakecommunitiesintheCoachellaValleyamongstthemostunderservedinthestateofCalifornia.TheCoachellaValleyhealthcarecrisisisanurgentandcompellingprobleminneedofasolution.
TheCoachellaValleyHealthcareInitiative.
NumerousdevotedpeopleandorganizationshaveandcontinuetobededicatedtoimprovinghealthcareaccessforthemedicallyunderservedcommunitiesintheCoachellaValley.Theirtirelesseffortsaredeservingofpraise.PrevioushealthandhealthcareassessmentreportshaveleadtoabetterunderstandingoftheCoachellaValley’shealthcareneeds,strengths,weaknesses,andaccessbarriers.ManyresidentsoftheCoachellaValleyneverthelesscontinuetofacelargedisparitiesandobstaclesinobtaininghealthcare.ThepurposeoftheCoachellaValleyHealthcareInitiative(CVHI)istoimprovehealthcareaccessintheCoachellaValleywiththegoalofreducinghealthcaredisparitiesandimprovinghealthoutcomesandwellnessforallresidents.Theirfirstendeavoristofacilitateacommunity-based,collaborative,andregionalCoachellaValleyHealthcareAccessandWellnessStrategicPlantobeusedasacommunityguidewiththecommonpurposetoremedythehealthcarecrisis.
