Topic: What is culture?

Learning objectives: Students will be able to Define culture Define tradition Share information about their culture

Time Frame: One class period (50 minutes) Resources:

Student: notebook, pencil, textbook (Social Studies New York City, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) Teacher: Smartboard

Activities: Teacher and students will be reading the chapter in the textbook about culture. While reading, the class will discuss culture and create a culture web on the Smartboard. Students will then answer questions from the textbook about what was read. Logistics: The students should already have their textbooks at their desks. The teacher will hand out a blank web so as the teacher is filling it out on the Smartboard the students can fill it in. Teacher support: The teacher will be questioning the students during the reading. Work flow: The reading passage in the textbook and the creation of the web will be done as whole group instructions. The questions at the end of the chapter will be done individually. Social learning: The students will not be working together but they will be discussing the meaning of culture together and giving their opinions Product: The students will all have a culture web and the textbook questions answered. Assessment: The teacher can assess the students during the reading and the creation of the web. The teacher can also look at the students answers to the textbook questions to see if they fully understood the readings.
