BEAT LA: The Padres and Dodgers conclude their four-game series to open the season this afternoon, with Clayton Richard and Aaron Harang each taking the hill for their 2012 debuts...the four-game series marks the first of six matchups against the Dodgers, including a three-game set to begin the Padres first road trip (4/13-15)...the Dodgers next visit to Petco Park will be 5/16-17 for a two-game series. LAST TIME OUT: The Padres dropped their first extra-inning contest of the season, losing 6-5 in 11 innings to the Dodgers last night...the Padres found themselves down early, trailing 5-0 after four innings, but battled back with a five-run fifth to tie the game...the five-run inning featured just two hits, but was driven by five walks, one wild pitch and a hit batter...the Friars walked in four consecutive plate appearances, bringing in runs with the final three...according to the Elias Sports Bureau, the only other time the Padres drew three straight bases loaded walks was on 4/5/84 vs. PIT...the last time the Padres scored at least five runs in an inning was 7/31/11 vs. COL. EASTER SUNDAY: Easter Sunday has fallen during the regular season in four of the last six seasons, with the Padres going 3-1 in those tilts...the Padres won in 06, 07 and 09 before their Easter winning streak was snapped last season. MASTERS OF THE DIAMOND: As San Diego native Phil Mickelson looks to grab his fourth Masters victory at Augusta National this afternoon, the Padres will be looking for their fifth win on Masters Sunday in the last six years...since 2007, the Padres have only lost once (2010) on the final day of the Masters Tournament, winning in 07, 08, 09 and 11. SLOW STARTS: The Padres 0-3 start to the 2012 campaign is the first since the 2003 season...the last time the club lost each of its first four games was in 1994. SNAP OUT OF IT: San Diego is looking to avoid its first four-game sweep since losing all four to the Phililes during a weekend set at Petco Park from 4/21-24 of last season...the last time the Dodgers swept a four-game series against the Padres was 4/30-5/3 of the 2009 season at Dodger Stadium... they last swept a four-game series in San Diego 6/28-7/1 of the 2001 season. BIRTHDAY BOY: Yonder Alonso celebrates his 25th birthday today...born April 8, 1987 in Havana, Cuba, Alonso shares a birthday with First Lady Betty Ford (1918), former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan (1938), basketball Hall of Famer John Havlicek (1940), rapper Biz Markie (1964) and 2010 Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez (1986). RISE UP: Jesus Guzman is the only Padre to have hit safely in each of the clubs first three games, talling one hit in each tilt so far...Guzman has gone 1-for-4, 1-for-3 and 1-for-4 this series, tallying doubles in the first and second games and driving in a run in the first and third games...Guzman hit .308 (20-for-65) this Spring, belting six home runs while collecting 14 RBI...his home run total was second in the Cactus League to Albert Pujols seven. ON THE HILL: Clayton Richard makes his 2012 debut this afternoon, his first start since 7/4 of last year...Richard made just 18 starts for the Padres in 2011 before undergoing season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder...he had won each of his final three starts before being placed on the DL, posting a 1.59 ERA (3 ER/17.0 IP) over that stretch...today Richard will be making his eight career start against the Dodgers, having gone 4-1 with a 2.58 ERA (11 ER/38.1 IP) in his seven previous outings. FAMILIAR FACE: The Padres today will face San Diego native and former Padre Aaron Harang... Harang spent the 2011 campaign with the Padres, going 14-7 with a 3.64 ERA (69 ER/170.2 IP) in 28 starts. BULLYING PEN: San Diego relievers have combined to allow just three runs over their 14.1 innings of work in the first three games of the season, posting a 1.88 ERA...over the three games, Ernesto Frieri (1.0), Micah Owings (3.1), Andrew Cashner (2.0), Luke Gregerson (1.0), Huston Street (1.0) and Joe Thatcher (0.1) have each worked scoreless ball...the Padres bullpen has limited the Dodgers to a .191 clip (9-for-47) with nine strikeouts.
