e all can remem-ber our firstencounter withsomeone who was “dif-ferent.”In grade school Iremember Joy, a blue-eyed girl I often encoun-tered during recess. Irecall she always woresweatpants and a sweat-shirt and was a lot like thecharacter Corky on “LifeGoes On.” I rememberfeeling awkward andunsure of how to play  with her.Nowadays, I see more young people are com-fortable with those withdifferent abilities.I wonder if locally some of those improvedattitudes are due to theoutreach done by A Touch of Understanding. The Granite Bay non-profit was founded with aunique mission of mak-ing students aware of thechallenges faced by those with physical and mentaldisabilities. While many programs cater solely tothe disabled, ATOUbridges the gap by help-ing the broader commu-nity understand how thedisabled are different, butalso how they are thesame. The organization cele-brated its 15th anniver-sary last month, and thismonth marks theirbiggest event of the year, the Access to Care Fair atBayside church. Whether you need atune-up for your wheel-chair, want to hearexperts speak on autismor would like to expose your children to some of the disability awarenessactivities that will beavailable, check out thisunique event April 21.
