your VoTe for a green CounCillor really CounTs

You are electing 3 councillors to serve Leith. Labour and the SNP are well-established in the area. Voters wavering between those two parties and the Greens can safely choose the Greens. And remember a vote for either SNP or Lib Dems says that you are happy with the way those two parties have botched and bungled the running of the council over the last five years.

VoTe Chas booTh

I am passionately committed to Leith, as demonstrated by my voluntary work with Greener Leith and my campaigning with fellow parents to save Leith Waterworld. You may or may not think of yourself as a Green voter but if you want a campaigning councillor who will stand up for the interests of Leith, please give me your first vote.

I have consistently opposed the Leith Biomass plant, and I co-wrote the Greener Leith objection to the plant.
st Campaigning again ld closure Leith Waterwor ne with Alison Johnsto ack! MSP and Splashb Askham campaigner Chris

In 2007 I helped in the campaign against the Seafield Stink, and highlighted the need for investment to end the odour problem at the sewage works. Ive been a volunteer and director of environment group Greener Leith since 2009 and helped run the successful We love Leith campaign in 2009-10.

Making a differenCe
Green councillors were first elected in Edinburgh in 2007. Since then they have worked hard to make Edinburgh a greener and fairer city. Cllr Steve Burgess Successfully campaigned for lower car-parking charges for vehicles which cause less pollution. Steve also secured a commitment to look at ways of investing in services using income from tourism. Cllr Maggie Chapman Pioneered the eith Decides scheme, giving the community more say over how money is spent in their area. Maggie was also instrumental in ensuring the Council rejected deeply unpopular changes to social care services. Cllr Alison Johnstone Won a commitment to invest money in school energy budgets, worked with campaigners to keep Meadowbank Stadium at Meadowbank, and with local traders to promote and protect small independent businesses in the face of unfettered supermarket expansion.

WhaT are you doing noW?

Im leading efforts to bring Scotlands first communityowned urban wind turbine to Leith: a project which could deliver thousands of pounds of community investment to the area. Im also active in the Splashback! campaign to save Leith Waterworld, and, together with Green Councillors, successfully delayed the sale of the building to allow a community bid to run the pool. Im also a keen cyclist and a member of Spokes, the Lothian cycle campaign; a volunteer cycle path Ranger with Sustrans; and Im a director of Edinburgh-based bike recycling project, the Bike Station.

WhaT Will you do onCe eleCTed?

Just 18% of 1 votes in Leith on May 3 will see Chas returned as one of the wards three councillors

I will ensure the Council supports the re-opening of Leith Waterworld, either as a community-owned social enterprise or in some other form. We cannot allow this wonderful facility to be lost to Leith. Ill support the creation of wind turbine construction jobs at Leith docks while ensuring that local people are fully consulted on any proposals. I will continue to oppose the Leith Biomass power plant. Ill promote local shops and businesses in the face of increasing pressure from large retailers. I will protect and enhance the green and natural assets of Leith including Leith Links and the Water of Leith, and work to enhance and expand the network of cycling and walking routes around Leith.

That is with just three Green councillors. Think what more Green councillors could do!

Greens in Edinburgh want to make Edinburgh a fairer and greener city and listen to the priorities of local people.
Well defend public services provided by public bodies - opposing privatisation and demanding accountability from companies the Council works with. Well support a programme of green jobs, investing in energy efficiency of homes, public buildings and energy generation. Well protect public assets - our local schools, parks, libraries and leisure facilities. Well use the councils powers to back local businesses over giant supermarkets and chainstores, breathing new life into neighbourhoods. Well give more power to communities, including community councils, parent councils and residents groups.
