causehewastiredofit.Whatimpressedhimwasthe
absoluteandutterinanityofit.Thesingingwas

delightwasofthethinnesttexture,andhewasboundto
saythelaughwasloudestwhenthetexturewasdipped
inindecentsuggestiveness.Itdepressedhimtofindso
manyyoungpeoplefindingtheirpleasuresintheseshal-
lowandsomewhatuncleanpools.Hedidnotwant
everybodytolikejustwhatheliked,andhecertainly
didnotwanttolikewhateverybodyelseseemedtolike.
Pleasuresshouldnotinvolveanystrain,butwecould
notfindlastingandpuredelightsinthefirstshallow
puddleontheroad.

youbeheldboundbysuchanotionifitisnottrue?It
isamereexcrescenceonSt.Paul'srealspiritualteach-
ing,andisnotessentialtoit.Jesusneversaidanything
aboutit."Blindleaderoftheblind.Why'shouldPaul
inhislaterteachingdwelluponit?Havingstatedit,be
haslaidthebasisfortheScripturedoctrineofredemp-
tion,andthereisnoneedforfurtherrepetition;but
whenhereachestheculmination-theresurrectionfrom
tbedead-hesetsthesetwomenoveragainsteachotherin
amannerwhichagreesperfectlywiththisfundamental
fact."Jesusdidnotmentionit."ButHecameto

Mr.Campbell'steachingmaybeattractiveto"men;"

ThesequeltothemineexplosionatCourrieresneed
notsurpriseanybody,nowthatthewholefactsofth«
workingoftheminehavebeenrevealed.Itisscarcelv
crediblethathumanlifecanhavebeensocheaplytreated
asitappearstohavebeen.Had
reasonableprecautionsbeentaken.

beensaved.Thepleaofexpense,
whichwasatfirstfreelyoffered,isclearlywithoutfoun-
dation,sincethetenfrancsharesareto-dayworthin
theopenmarket2,895francseach!Itisamazing.
Yet,withthisenormousprofit,thecompanypayssosmall
asumtoitsworkmen,andmakessolittleprovisionfor
theirsafety,thathumanliferanksonlyassomuch
machinery,tobethrowntothescrap-heapwhenwornout.
Isitanywonderthatthemenrevolt?Thecrazeforbig
dividendsseemstobluntmen'sconsciencestothcde-
