notinclinedtomopeovertheirser- iouslosses.Thosewhohavere- servesuponwhichtheycandraw,donotrequiremuchof oursympathy,buttherearcmanywhobytheearthquake andthefirehavelosttheirall.Somewithsmall businesses,builtupbysteadytoil,arenowinaposition worsethanwhentheystarted.Withthesetoilerswedo sincerelysympathise,andearnestlyhopethatinthe adjustmentofconditionswhichwillobtainwhilstthe newcityrisesfromitsruins,they,andallothersufferers, mayfindfoodandshelterforthemselvesandthosewho aredependentuponthem.Inthisconnectionitisnote- worthythatthereseemstohavebeengreatseismic activityinvariouspartsoftheearth.Earthquake shockshavebeenfrequent,andthevolcanicoutbreaksat Vesuviushavebeendestructive,andterrifyingtothe inhabitantsofNaples.Whentheyhaveceasedmenmay settoworkandremovetheruinsleftbehind,andmay rebuildtheirwarehousesandresidences,buttheyare perfectlyhelplesstoaverttheshocks,ortorestrainthe volcano.Theyarehelpless,too,whentheearthshakes, andthevolcanobelchesforthitsfieryvomit.Theycan onlyseektoflee.Somedaytheseforceswillbeusedby theLordforthedirectinflictionofHisvengeance,and theirpresenteffectswilltellhowdestructiveandirresist- ibletheywillbe.
