Well explore how to: identify major projects on which volunteers can be helpful; integrate them into those projects; smooth relations between staff and volunteers, and make paid personnel more effective in deploying and supervising their unpaid counterparts; know when to consider volunteers for leadership positions, including the Board of Directors; and keep them motivated (using The Big MAC approach) so you can truly rely on them. Each summer, the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless awards several renewable college scholarships to graduating seniors who experienced homelessness while in high school. The freshman year award is $2,000, with at least $1,000 awarded yearly to students as they progress through college. Eligible to apply are students who were homeless at some point while attending Chicago Public high schools, or homeless students living anywhere in Illinois who were formerly clients of the CCH Law Project. Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 scholarships. The deadline to submit an application, including two letters of reference, is Tuesday, May 1, 2012. Volunteers feel under-utilized and leave; nonprofits become discouraged due to lost time and energy. Though NPOs desire the professional expertise of skilled volunteers, they don't have tools or methods to prepare their organizations for this new resource.Tap Into Experience (TIE) is a unique program developed in 2011 through an AmeriCorps grant to CLOI that prepares organizations to effectively integrate professional-level volunteers.
