ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMME IN S.J.K ( C ) HIN HUA, KLANG. 1.0 Programme 1 ( English Week) 1.1 Introduction The use of English Language is very important among school children. Therefore it must not be used only in the classroom or when pupils are in school. It has to be practiced in their daily conversation regardless place and time. A consisten use of English Language will ensure pupils; at their tender age inculcate the essential skills needed. Reading, speaking, listening, writing and grammar in English Language are five important skills pupils should master. Therefore, two English programmes have been implemented in my school, S.J.K. ( C) Hin Hua, Klang which are conducted by the English Panel. One of the programme is English Week which is a short term programme. The other programmes is Performance Increment Programme English Language , a long term programme.

1.ENGLISH WEEK 1.2 Aims of English Week The English week which carried out by the English Panel has been implemented in S.J.K ( C ) Hin Hua for several years. There three aims of the English Week. First, to help students realize the values of learning English and motivation. Second, to explore and analyze the language use both in classroom and in usual life. There will be sufficient input of real language use to encourage acenisition. Moreover, to create the atmosphere in the language class like encouraging, supportive and conducive learning. 1.3 Objectives of English Week There are a number of objectives of the programme. The objectives are based on the activities planned through out the English Week. a) Story Telling Competition The Story Telling Competition is held with the following objectives

(iii) (iv)

To enhance and improve the listening and speaking skills. To instill pupils interest in reading and writing in English.

Target Group : Year 2 to Year 6 pupils

b) Action Song Competition The Action Song Competition is held with the following objectives : (i) To encourage and increase the use of English language among the younger pupils. (ii) To build confidence and sense of ease with English language among the younger pupils. (iii) To develop skills of integrating scripting of music and movement with language. (iv) To provide a platform for fun and happy learning.

Target Group : Year 1, 2 and 3 pupils only

c) Written Composition The Written Composition is held with the following objectives : (i)

To motivate pupils to read more in English.

The English Week was carried out from first week of August until third week of August ( 1 August until 18 August 2011) .All the activities were carried out according to the date and time arranged by the board of school and listed in the school calendar. The table below shows the details of the implementation of the programmes.

Report on implementation of Programme (a) Story Telling Competition The Story Telling Competition is an effective teaching and learning activity that can help to improve the standard of English among the pupils. The Story Telling Competition is held for the Year 2 and Year 3 pupils ( Level 1) and Year 4 to Year 6 pupils ( Level 2 ).Each class will send 2 to 3 representatives for the competition. Stories presented must not touch on sensitive issues such as race, religion, politics, colour, personalities,etc. Stories chosen must be educational with moral and values. The first five best story teller will receive a trophy and a certificate. Meanwhile the 6th to 13th placing pupils will be given certificates as as consolations. The other participants are also given certificate as a token of appreciation. The best storytellers will represent the school. The story competiton was carried out on 1 August 2011. The teacher-in-charge was Madam Ng Ah Youk. The themes were courage, kindness and responsibility.The stories to be presented could be taken from old folklore or modern stories. This competition was the most interesting. There were many talented pupils who presented their story creatively.The combination of gesture, pronunciation of word and rhythms of sentences had attracted the audience which included some parents. Some of them gave full support for their children in order to give them more confidence. The judges had a tough time to decide on the winners.The champion for the story telling competition Years 4 was Chong Bee Shuan from 4 Setia. The story that she told was Random Acts of Kindness. The second place went to Tan Chai Ying from 4 Cekal with the story entitle King Arthur. The third place went to Albert Lim Jia Ren from 4 Jujur. The title of his story was Kuruvi. The champion for the story telling competition Years 5 was Glenys Tan Xiang Yi from 5 Harmoni. The story that she told was The Fox And The Billy Goat. The

second place went to Saw Xue Yi from 5 Yakin with the story entitle Why Tigers Have Stripes. The third place went to Solomon Ong from 5 Adil. The title of his story was Nail Soup.

(b)

Action Song Competition The Action Song Competition is held for the Year 2 pupils. Each team comprise of 15 students. The teacher has to prepare a script with the choice of theme. Scripts should not touch on sensitive issues such as race, religion, colour, personalities, politics,and etc.Time allocated is 5-8 minutes. Pupils can use props and background aids at minimum level. Recorded music is allowed but should not have voices or word. Movements should not exceed and overwhelm the articulation of the song by the pupils. The teacher-in-charge was Madam Regina Kristy. The selection of song was made by both the English Language teacher and the Music Teacher. There were 3 judges for the adjudication. The judges were teachers from neighbouring school.The winner of the Action Song Competition was group Cheerfull from 2 Cekal. They presented the song title You raise me up. The runner up went to group Melodies from 2 Amanah with their song Flying Without Wing. The third runner up went to group Daffodil, who sang Hero. Prizes were given away on the same day of competition.

(c)

Written Composition The Written Composition is held for Year 5 and Year 6 pupils. The students are given 120 questions ang they have to answer them within an hour. The best five from each class will be given prizes. In addition to this activity, six best pupils are chosen to represent the school. They are specially trained by giving them a lot of exercises on grammar. While training the student, the teachers integrating the four skills.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMME] 011 The champion for this competition was Ang Shien Yee from 5 Adil. The

second place went to Samantha Ong Jia Xi from 5 Usaha and the third place went to Justin Lim from 5 Yakin. For Year 6, the champion for this competition was Elaine Ong from 6 Setia. The second place went to Giam yi Ai from 6 Taat and the third place went to Sze Ker En from 6 Berdikari.

(d)

Reading Program Reading Program is conducted every Thursday morning through the PA System. Pupils will be given a special reader and they will be read along with the cassette played. Actually, Mr Robert Lam introduced this program in 2001. In this activity the priority is given to listening and Reading skills. For Year 4 ppupils, the reading material contains collective nouns and similes while the Year 5 and 6 pupils will read an Idioms.

1.6 Strengths and Weaknesses of The Programme Strengths 1. Pupils like the programme. 2. Improve pupils spoken language. 3. PTA sponsored the prizes for the winners. Weaknesses 1. Hach of time for practice. 2. Not everyone has chance to take part. 3. Not all the pupils can wacth the competition due to the space of the school hall.

1.7 Suggestions and Recommendations In order to make the English Week more successful in the future, it is suggested that the duration of English Week to be extended to four week. That will enable more activities to implemented during the English Week.Second, the choice of activities must be variety to promote more participation of pupils. As the member of the school teachers, I would like to recommend the school administration to allow the pupils to watch all the activities while they were implemented.The English Language would also like to recommend the school administration to allowactivities to be carried out outside the formal school time table so that more pupils can watch all the activities at different time and place. The school administration must also take immediate action to repair and improve the quality of the school P.A system for better quality of pupils presentation.

1.8 Conclusion All the activities conducted during the English Week given priovity to the intergration of four skills. Therefore, the pupils gained a lot of information and widen their knowledge through the activities. They are also exposed to the interesting way of learning English. The teachers in English Panel have doing a good job in carrying out all the activities and they should be given the credits. Their fabulous and wonderful works should be continued as all the activities really complement the teaching ang learning process of English in this school.

Objectives of BI Perfomance Improvement Programme. There are a number of objectives of the programme. The objectives are based on the

activities planned through out the BI Perfomance Improvement Programme. a) UPSR English Motivation Programme Technique of answering UPSR English Motivation Programme Technique of answering is held with the following objectives (i) (ii) To expose to the students the technique of answering UPSR paper. To carry out effective motivation among the students boost up their spirit and self confidence. (iii) To prepare themselves before the UPSR

Target Group : All Year 6 pupils b) Get Ready Programme Get Ready Programme is held with the following objectives :(i) To prepare teaching and learning materials for all students from Year 1 to Year 6. (ii) (iii) To make sure all students get and do the same exercises at the same time. To make sure that lessons can carry on evev though English teachers are not Around because the materials have been prepared earlier.

c) Adoption Programme ( Program Anak Angkat ) Adoption Programme is held with the following objectives :(i)

Select English teachers to guide the weak student from Level 1 and Level 2

To give chance to the students to share their learning problems with teacher.

(iii)

To assist the students.

Target Group : Year 1 to Year 6

d) Additional Classes The objectives of carrying out the Additional Classes programme are as below :(i) (ii) (iii) The teachers could cover the syllabus as soon as possible. To raise the pupils achievement in academic. Teachers could have enough time to guide the pupils in their studies.

e) Get To Know Similies The objectives of carrying out Get To Know Similies are as below :(i)

Pupils could have the opportunity to learn similies. To enrich the pupils knowledge on similies when the programme is being

To encourage pupils to use similies during examinitions and as preparation for them to go to the secondary schools.

All these activities are conducted in accordance with the calendar issued by the school administrators. Report on implementation of Programme ( a ) Motivation on UPSR Answering Technique Programme Motivation on UPSR Answering Technique Programme is an effective teaching and learning activity that can help to improve the standard of English among the pupils. Motivation on UPSR Answering Technique Programme is held for the Year 6 pupils. Motivation on UPSR Answering Technique was carried out on January until September. The teacher-in-charge was Madam Ng Ah Youk and all the BI teachers. Ways to implement :(i) (ii) Pupils listen to motivational talks given by speakers. Pupils discuss with the speakers about the problems faced while answering questions.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMME] 011 Pupils conduct workshop and present a task assigned to them.

( b ) Get Ready Programme Get Ready Programme was carried out on January. The teacher in-charge was Madam Regina Kristy. Ways to implement :(i) (ii) Exercises materials prepared by teachers during school holidays. Materials printed during school holidays to be used as soon as the school session started. (iii) The teachers who teach classes on distributing materials to pupils at time on time. ( c ) Adoption Programme ( Program Anak Angkat ) Adoption Programme ( Program Anak Angkat ) was carried out on January until December . The teacher-in-charge was Madam Saw Lee Ping. Ways to implement :( i ) Teacher prepares materials for selected pupils. (ii) Selected pupils were given guidance and encouraged by teacher as appropriate time as the morning ( before the school session begins ) and the recess time. (iii)Pupils were given exercises and guidance by the ability of pupils.

( d ) Additional Classes Additional Classes was carried out on January until December . The teacher-in-

charge was Miss Tan Hooi Boon and all BI teachers. Ways to implement :(i) Pupils were given exercise based models UPSR and familiarize the pupils with UPSR questions. (ii) (iii) Pupils make reinforcement exercises. Pupils discuss and having Question Answer section with teacher.

( e ) Get To Know Similies Get To Know Similies was carried out every Monday morning during assembly. The teacher-in-charge was Madam Tee Chew Hong. Ways to implement :(i) (ii) Teacher prepare Similies by Year 1 to Year 6. Teacher announces the prepared similies to pupils every week and make sure that pupils copy it in the vocabulary book. (iii) Teacher perform tests similies and giving gifts to each of the five pupils whom score the highest marks by class.

Suggestions and Recommendations


1. Worksheet and exercises must be rearrange according to the needs of the students

every 3 year once. 2. Teachers must take turns to teach students according to their ability and levers. 3. Teaching material must be prepare according to the standard of the students by teachers.
4. Teacher must check the students works to ensure the improvement of the students.

5. To invite experience teacher to carry out the motivation programme.
