LING 583 - Final Lab Session: Scribd & Self-Access Materials (4/12)

Scribd
Software Overview

Scribd - This software allows you to upload content and share it in several ways.(http://www.scribd.com/)
Users’ (
Teacher’s
) Perspective Viewers’ (
Students’
) Perspective
* Username / Password Required for Use * Materials can be viewed in full-screenmode without requiring downloading andopening with appropriate program* Content can be kept private or made public* Viewers can download or print contentfrom either the link to the Scribd documentor directly from embedded document* Content (MS Word documents, PDFfiles) can be uploaded from hard disk/USBor directly from Google Docs* If necessary, viewers can also sharecontent through multiple mediums(Facebook, Twitter, re-embedding,copy/paste URL)* Options after uploading includeembedding into blog, copy/paste URL,download/print files, some additionalediting functions* For WordPress users, WP-specific embedcode is available
Possible Advantages / Disadvantages

Advantages:

Ideal for backing up self-created materials (PDF format allows for moremaneuverability than MS Word format)

Ideal for teachers working in multiple locations (reduces need to carry printedmaterials and/or USB everywhere you go)

Username/password is not necessary to view, download, print availablematerials

Providing student viewers with one URL link (either direct link to materials inScribd website or link to blog with embedded materials) allows for quick, easy access, especially if students lack computer skills

Option to print/download is there, even if unnecessary

Disadvantages:

Requires processing time for Scribd to upload and convert materials
o

Files are converted in order of receiving them
o

What if the file is big? Could processing bog down the site responsetime?

Publishing choices are limited to Public or Private
o

Private setting does not allow for full screen viewing, downloading, or sharing
o

Public setting is required for full screen viewing, downloading, and/or sharing

Would require 1-2 training sessions to become familiar with Scribd site and/or manipulating embedded materials (Not necessarily a disadvantage, but moreof factual information)
