In China, the new year celebrationscoincide with the spring festival and someof the festivities are grounded in somegolden rules that we should all consider,no matter the date onthe calendar.
Practice whatyou preach
The ancientChinese wanted goodluck to shine on them.As such, in manyaspects of theirfascinating culture, they work to invitegood luck into theirlives. One way that theChinese people invitegood luck is to speak only positive words.Negativity is notfashionable andneither are curse words, particularlyduring the spring when nature displays allof its glory. Happy and positive are thebuzz words of the season.
Celebrating the spring season
In ancient Chinese homes, as in thewestern world, certain objects are held inhigh esteem. These objects deserve respectand a clean environment. During the springfestival—an event which takes place for 15days after the date of the first new moon of the new year—spring cleaning takes placewith vigor.Since the Chinese people have longbelieved that cleanliness invites goodfortune, homes are cleaned, swept, andtended to all over China. However, oncethe new moon appears, all of the cleaningstops for the 15 day celebratory period. Why stop cleaning? The Chinese peoplefear that the good luck may be inadver-tently swept away.It follows that our western tradition of “spring cleaning” derived from this ancienttradition.
Say it with food
In the springtime, good luck signs comein the form of foodstuffs also. The Chinese will serve fish for manyreasons including its association withpromoting long life. Other foods are madeinto certain forms that suggest good luck. For instance, those delicious and ultrahigh-calorie pork-stuffed dumplings inwhich we have all indulged at our favoriteAsian restaurants are traditionally andintentionally made in the shape of goldingots or gold bars.
Lessons can be learned from ancient Chinese proverbs
