Consider the different views of love andseduction presented in the poems you havestudied.
Seduction is the process of deliberately enticing aperson to engage in some sort of behaviour, frequentlysexual in nature. The term may have a positive ornegative connotation. Famous seducers from historyinclude Cleopatra, Giacomo Casanova, and the fictionalcharacter Don Juan. Seduction is a very popular subject inthe poetic world with many Author’s we have studiedthree poems in particular to his coy mistress by AndrewMarvell, Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti, The Seductionby Eileen McCauley. In the three different poems we learnabout how love and seduction was viewed in Marvell’s 17

Century; Rossetti’s late 19
th
century England and Moderntimes. To his Coy mistress was written by Andrew Marvell inthe late 17
th
century it is about the Lord of a manorattempting to win one of the maid’s love it is written incourtly language. A word that sums the mans point of viewvery well is “Carpe Dium” meaning to seize the day thewhole poem talks about how they need to get togetherbefore it is too late he uses a lot of flattery to achieve this.He gives the impression that he has no time to waste byusing such sentences as “for youth passes swiftly”; themaid is playfully hesitant and seems to be not surewhether his love is true.Cousin Kate was written by Christina Rossetti in thelate 19
th
century. The Seduction was written by Eileen McCauley in the20
th
century. The poem is written in ballad form in the openingstanza Kate is very content and seems quite happy she isfrom a lower class family and she works in for the lord of amansion and he try’s to seduce her by with flattery andcomplimenting her, he says that they need to waste noAnthony Perez
 
time and get together as quick as possible because theretime will so be over “but dallying will not do” meaning hehas no time. If they had “world enough and time” theywould spend there time on leisurely walks and passingtime together he then spends time talking about herfeatures “two hundred years to adore each breast , butthirty thousand to each breast; he comes up withpreposterous numbers showing that she deserves all thetime in the world but then changes turn and so the poetsays they must seize the day.Even though Andrew Marvell writes to his CoyMistress” in first person even though the poem is actuallyabout another Mans passionate love for her and expresseshis thoughts, the man is impatient and extremelydesperate, he is motivated by the thought of seducing herrather than true love; Passion owns him which can makepeople think he is immature
