ABOUT YESTERDAY...:
Altoona received another strong start rom its starting pitcher on Sunda aternoon but onceagain Richmond scratched out enough runs to take the game, this time b a score o 31, in ront o 7,691 at TheDiamond.
Aaron Pribanic
(02) was hit with the tough loss ater allowing two runs across ve innings on our hits.Richmond scored single runs in the second and th o the Fairax, Va. native to open up the tworun advantage. TheCurve broke on to the scoreboard in the seventh when
Brock Holt
grounded into a orce out with the bases loaded tobring
Quincy Latimore
in rom second and cut the lead to one. A big insurance run came across or the Squirrels inthe eighth when Chris Dominguez, who walked and then moved to second on a wild pitch, scored on a twoout singlerom Daniel Maora. Altoona was retired in order in the ninth b Brett Boch, son o San Francisco Giants managerBruce Boch, who recorded his rst save o the season. The Curve had chances to score on Sunda, going 1or12 withrunners in scoring position and stranding 10 on the bases.
CURVE/HARRISBURG SERIES:
The Senators and the Curve will meet a total o 14 times this season despite being theclosest team geographicall to Altoona (roughl 121 miles). This is the rst o two trips that the Curve will make toMetro Bank Park in 2012 with the other coming at the end o June. Altoona will welcome the ‘Sens to Curve, Pa. duringtheir next homestand or three games rom April 2426. The two teams will not meet again in the regular season aterthe Curve’s nal series in Harrisburg, which ends on June 29. Last season, Altoona was 511 vs. Harrisburg and 37inside the connes o Metro Bank Park.
FOR ALTOONA:
LHP
Aaron Poreda
makes the start or the Curve in the opening tilt between the two clubs onMonda night in the capital o the commonwealth. Poreda worked around ve walks and three hits in his rst start o the season against Akron, a week ago toda, to nd his rst win o the 2012 campaign. This is Poreda’s rst real returnto starting since 2009 when he was used as a starter with the Charlotte Knights (TripleA White Sox) and the PortlandBeavers (TripleA Padres) amidst his time in The Show with the White Sox and the Padres. He’s been a reliever the pasttwo seasons except or two spot starts (one each in 2010 and 2011) and was claimed b the Pirates in the RuleV dratthis oseason. In his big league career, Poreda is 10 with a 2.70 ERA in 14 appearances out o the bullpen.
For more onPoreda, see page two.
FOR HARRISBURG:
The Senators, who dropped their nale to the redhot RPhils on Sunda, send RHP
Paul Demny
to the hill in the series opening contest on Monda night. Demn, 23, spent all o 2011 with the Potomac Nationals, starting 26 games while going 1010 with a 4.32 ERA. His monthl splits look like peaks and valles as he had a 2.08ERA in April, 6.93 ERA in Ma, 2.55 ERA in June, 8.42 in Jul and a 3.38 ERA in August (the season’s nal month). Despitehis upanddown ear, he struck out 108 in 143.2 innings pitched and had a 2:1 strikeouttowalk ratio (108 K/54 BB) inhis 26 starts. Demn was taken in the 6th round o the 2008 drat b the Nationals ater electing to not sign with theAtlanta Braves when he was taken in the 15th round o the drat a ear earlier. The right graduated rom East Bernard(Texas) HS and was the rst plaer taken out o East Bernard when selected b the Braves in ‘07 since Greg Kubes, whowas taken b the Phillies in 1998.
SHAKE AND BAKE:
LHP
Nathan Baker
made a prett good bid or an Eastern League Pitcher o the Week award as therst one o the ear encompasses the rst week and a hal o the season. In his two starts to start the ear, Baker is 20with an ERA o 0.82. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last 9 IP (he gave up his last run in the second inning o his rst start)and opponents are batting .118 o him in the earl going with our hits in 11 total innings. The award instead went toGreg Peave o Binghamton, who went 20 with a 0.00 ERA and 9 K in 10.2 IP across two starts.
GET ‘EM ON, GET ‘EM OVER, GET ‘EM IN
: The Curve have done a antastic job with the rst two over the past twogames but have altered on the nal aspect o getting them to cross home plate. In the last two games, the Curve hit2or21 (.095) with runners in scoring position and have let a total o 18 men let on base.
NUTS:
Despite the Curve pitching sta giving up just our runs over its last 25.0 IP in the past three games, the Curvehave won just one o the three contests. As a team, the 2.65 ERA is thirdbest in the circuit heading into game actionon Monda. Onl Akron (2.05) and Reading (2.56) have better team ERAs than the Curve.
CLEANING IT UP:
Ater making 13 errors through the seasons rst six games, Altoona has made just one in its pastthree and went two straight games without a miscue (April 13 and 14). The team’s 14 errors are third most in the ELbehind New Hampshire (17) and Portland (16).
SECOND TIME THROUGH RINGS TRUE:
Altoona seems to come alive oensivel and make adjustments the second time through the order as 12 o its29 runs scored so ar this ear have come in the ourth inning. In act, 22 o the team’s 29 runs have come rom the ourth inning on.
HEY SIX:
Shortstop
Brock Holt
has reached base sael in all nine games soar or the Curve, hitting sael in six o them and walking in the other three. The Stephenville, Texas native has collected multihit games (two hits in each)in our o his six games with a hit thus ar. Through the rst nine contests, he’shitting .357 with eight walks, ve strikeouts and the team’s onl two stolenbases.
READY AT THE DROP OF A BUTTON: Adalberto Santos
connected witha pinchhit single in the seventh inning on Sunda aternoon in Richmond.Altoona as a team is 3or4 with three singles and a pair o RBI in their rstour pinch hit attempts o the 2012 season.
