How the Sims Challenges Gender Joanna Finfer

Gender in Virtual Worlds

To understand how gender is constructed in virtual communities, I focused on The Sims. This virtual community is one where a user can run or ruin a Sims life by playing god. The Sims is one of the best selling simulation games in PC history, with over 125 million units sold. This virtual world challenges expectations about gender. From being a female in the military to being a male stylist, The Sims has evolved into a game where being gender-neutral is a new way to target an audience.

Traits, not stereotypes

With Create-A-Sim, you create a Sim (which is just like a person) by personality traits, not by gender roles.

Gay male and female Sims can become pregnant. A newly created Sim starts out as a blank slate in skills and gender attraction. They do not have an attraction to a specific gender unless you, the player, tells them to.

With The Sims Late Night, the world of The Sims has unfortunately taken a step backwards for gender equality. Normally, a Sim would have a pre-determined bust or muscle size. Now in Create-A-Sim, you have the ability for male and female Sims to adjust their muscle size. Specifically for female Sims, you have the ability to adjust their bust size. This not only promotes human insecurity, but exacerbates it.
