Emmy Lichtwitz Krasso was a successful woman artist in the early 20th Century, with her own studio in Vienna, Austria. In 1939 she fled Austria and went first to Russia, then to Mumbai, India. In India, she was permitted to draw life sketches of Mohandas Gandhi, and in 1945 completed her portrait of the Indian leader.
