White House Selects Baltimore Police Commander to Participate in Domestic Violen ce Workshop Northern District Major Sabrina Tapp-Harper

was selected through the Internation al Association of Chiefs of Police by the Executive Office of the Vice President of the United States Baltimore, MD / April 19, 2012 - Yesterday, Major Sabrina Tapp-Harper, commander of Baltimore s Northern Police District served as a law enforcement representative for the Obama Administration's effort to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. The meeting was opened by Vice President Joe Biden who praised law enforce ment for their efforts to combat domestic violence. White House Advisor on Viole nce Against Women, Lynn Rosenthal, Attorney General Eric Holder, Senior White Ho use Advisor Valerie Jarrett, and Ms. Sharon Love, mother of Yeardley Love and fo under of the One Love Foundation, were also present to speak about the need to reauthorize the law. This week, the United States Senate is expected to begin discussions on the reau thorization of the bill. The Violence Against Women Act was originally drafted b y then-Senator Joe Biden and signed into law in 1994. It was reauthorized by Con gress in both 2000 and 2005. thus far, the law has allocated more than $9 billio n to improve federal, state, and local-level investigation and prosecution of do mestic violence, rape and sexual assault and to provide support for prevention, education, temporary shelters, rape crisis centers and community services for su rvivors. At at ed es the meeting, the Obama Administration also announced new efforts to help comb and prevent domestic violence in the federal workplace. President Obama sign a memorandum directing federal agencies to adopt policies and provide employe who may be victims of domestic violence with assistance.
