Tommy Holmes, lacking even half a season of managerial seasoning,Wednesday took the helm of the Boston Braves abandoned by a four-time National League pennantwinner nearly twice his age.The 33-year-old Holmes, former Braves hitting hero, skippered Boston in its 4-3 loss against theCubs in Chicago only a few hours after Billy Southworth left for his Sunbury, Ohio, home after resigning his reported $50,000-a-year job Tues-day. Southworth, aged 58, had a five-year con-tract through 1952.Holmes, Brooklyn-born Irishman who owns
a batch of Braves’ batting records, never di-
rected a professional club until he took over theBoston-owned Hartford team in the Class AEastern League this spring.
“Don’t worry about experience,” commented
general manager John Quinn of the Braves.
“Remember Bucky Harris, Lou Boudreau and
Mel Ott all stepped into major league manage-rial spots without experience.
“Tommy has a fine background in baseball
(nine major league playing seasons all with theBraves) and he did a remarkable job the short
while he was at Hartford.” Holmes left Hart-
ford second in the Eastern loop race.Quinn said the Braves reluctantly acceptedthe resignation of Southworth, who last Sunday
told owner Lou Perini and Quinn he felt “someone else could do a better job.”

the majors in June. Wednesday’s triumph
boosted them into third place, five games back of the loop-leading Giants. The Dodgers boastthe best batting average (.307) and have scoredthe most runs (109) of any NL team this month.
Snider’s two safeties extended his hit streak

Easter’s Grand Slam Sparks Wynn,
Cleveland to Victory Over Red Sox
BOSTON
—
One month ago it appeared
Luke Easter’s ailing knee might derail his
baseball career. That knee seems in fine formnow.
Ditto Easter’s swing.
Easter, Cleveland’s hard
-hitting first sacker, launched a first inning grand slam Wednesdayas the American League-leading Indians de-feated the Red Sox, 9-1.Club officials and Tribe fans feared for
Easter’s career in May when he was sent to the bench under doctor’s orders. It was believed
his knee, which swelled whenever he tried to play, might require surgery. Or worse, thatthere might not be any cure for his malady.
The pain in Easter’s knee resulted in a
sickly average. Through May 22, he was bat-ting a punchless .233 with one home run andseven RBI in 60 at-bats.
He’s been a terror since his return, with sixhome runs and a .297 average. Wednesday’s
circuit clout was his second in three games. It made life easy for Cleveland starter EarlyWynn, who earned his fourth win in his pastfive decisions. Wynn (7-4) contributed an RBIdouble in the second inning. Bobby Avila andLarry Doby added homers for the Tribe.Loser Bill Wight (3-3) was knocked out of the box in the second inning, having allowedsix runs on five hits. He is winless in his pastfour starts.

wins since his return.Gil Coan had three RBI for Washington.Browns starter Lou Sleater (2-9) allowed tworuns in 5 2/3 innings.
Detroit’s Fred Hutchinson
scattered 10 hitsin a 7-
4 win in the opener, and Philadelphia’s

2 victory in the nightcap as the Tigers and A’s
split a doubleheader.Hutchinson (4-1), who pitched his fourthstraight complete game triumph, was backed byfour-hit efforts from Jerry Priddy and Pat
