•Keepawatchuleyeonyourlocalpetstoresandreportabuseand/orsubstandardconditionstoyourlocalanimalcrueltyocers.Writeletterstothestoremanagementandletthemknowthatyoudon’tapproveosellingbirdsandothersmallanimals.Letthemknowyouwillboycotttheirstoresuntiltheystopsellingliveanimals.
•Seektolearnmoreaboutpropercareandguardianshipocompanionbirdssoyoucanspotandreportabuse.Educateothersabouttheplightocaptivebirds.
•Althoughsomedomesticatedbirdshavebeenknowntosurviveatertheirreleaseintothewild,neverreleaseanexoticcaptivebirdintothewild.Innearlyallinstancesthesebirdssuerromtheelements,areattackedbypredators,orstarvetodeathbeoredyinganagonizingdeath.
•Writeletterstoyourlegislatorsandaskthemtocreateandstrengthenlawsthatwillprotectcaptivebirdsromabuseandnegligence.

oexoticbirdsarecaught,bred,andsoldannuallyorthepettrade.Someothosebirdsarecaughtinthewild.Othersarecaptivebredinunnatural,overcrowdedwarehouses.Bothcircumstancesultimatelyleadbirdstouncertainuturesandmoreotenthannot,tragicandpainullives.Aterleavingthewarehouses,birdsaretransportedunderstressulconditionstopetstoreswheretheyareotencaredorbyyoung,inadequatelytrainedemployees.Somebirdsareletunattendedwithoutoodandwaterorseveraldayswhenpetshopemployeestaketheirdaysooritheycallinsick.Manypetstorestreatbirdslikemereinventoryanddon’tprovidethebirdscomortableenvironments,adequatediet,ormedicalcarewhentheyareillorinjured.
