Q) .How does the knowledge of Organizational Behaviour help management graduates to understand and tackle human problems in an organization?

Human beings have the natural tendency to work and live together with others in social groups as a family, a clan, community or an organization. The individuals are bound together in a network of stable social relationships. Organizational Behaviour is the study and application of knowledge about how people as individuals and as groups act within organizations. It is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups and structures have on the behaviour within organizations for the purpose of applying such knowledge towards improving an organizations effectiveness. Organizational Behaviour is a human tool for human benefit. It helps in understanding and predicting the behaviour of individuals. It provides generalisations that managers can use to anticipate the effects of certain actions on human behaviour. It also helps in predicting the behaviour of an individual and thus helps the organization to be effective with good people skills which includes the ability to understand ones employees and to use this knowledge to make them work efficientlya vital requirement for the success of a person as a manager. Effective management means competent utilization of technical and financial resources. Organizational Behaviour is a discipline which enables a manager to motivate his subordinates towards higher productivity and better results. Organisational Behaviour focuses on three levels of analysis-Individual, Group and Organization. The performance of individuals, groups and the organization as a whole are all important and outstanding performance of each individual and group is recognized and highlighted. Behaviour at all three levels is interdependent and interrelated. The behaviour of individuals is a complex phenomenon and is affected by a large number of factors

such as personality, attitudes, perception, learning, motivation, social, cultural and other factors. This study of behaviour of an individual working in the organization is known as micro-organizational behaviour. Behaviour pattern of individuals is also influenced by the groups to which they belong. Research studies have shown that people behave differently in groups than they do as as individuals. Several factors influence the behaviour of groups such as group goals, norms, communication, leadership, cohesiveness and so on. An understanding of group dynamics is essential to reduce conflicts and improve morale and productivity in the organization. Organizational Behaviour, which is an applied behavioural science built on contributions from a number of behavioural disciplines like psychology, sociology and anthropology, helps managers to understand their subordinates better and also manage them better. Knowledge of factors that govern the values, attitudes and the perception of a person which ultimately conditions the thought process of the person and makes him behave in a particular way, aids the manager to manage his subordinates in a more effective manner.Infact as every human being is unique ,a thorough understanding of human behaviour and human beings in general makes the manager deal with each individual differently, thereby increasing the overall productivity of the workforce and resolving any kind of conflict that may have existed. An understanding of group dynamics how people behave in groups and the factors that determine their actions, also contributes positively to the managers task. This understanding of human behaviour is further enriched by the painstaking researches conducted by many eminent people in a real working environment with enlightening results The Hawthorne studies conducted by Elton Mayo for example, which threw considerable light on how individual behaviour is influenced by group norms.Infact the development of Organizational Behaviour as a subject is a continuous process which goes way beyond the textbook. While it is true that a preliminary knowledge of the subject is essential for a manager to tackle the human problems of his organization properly, it is equally true that the managers must possess the eagerness and drive to innovate and the competence to make their own observations on the subject which would help them in the future and prove beneficial in a rapidly changing business environment.
