April25,2012 DearGovernorDayton, TheMinnesotaBurnCareCommunityurgesyoutovetolegislation(HF1774)thatwouldexpand thetypesoffireworksallowedforpersonaluseinMinnesota. Thedeathrateandpropertydamagefromconsumerfireworksstronglycorrelateswiththe strengthorpermissivenessofstatefireworkslaws.Minnesotacurrentlyhasthe13thlowest rateoffiremortalityintheU.S.Onlystatesthathaveeitheratotalbanorsignificant restrictionsonfireworkshavelowerdeathratesincludingDelaware,NewJersey, Massachusetts,MaineandVermont.

InthefouryearsafterMinnesotapassedlegislationin2002thatrelaxedrestrictionsonthesale and use of nonaerial, nonexplosive consumer fireworks, fireworks related injuries increased nearly 400 percent and the annual dollar loss from firework incidents increased nearly 900 percent.*Anyincreaseinrevenuefromexpandeduseoffireworkswouldbemorethanoffset byanincreaseininjuries,deathsandpropertydamage.
