ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: Using a prolific running attack, the Harrisburg Senators extended their league lead in stolen bases with seven more while blowing by the Curve 5-1 in Tuesdays series opener of three at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Jeff Kobernus led the way for the Senators, swiping four bags on his own, while Destin Hood, Chris Rahl, and Eury Perez each added a steal of their own. The Curve got a three-hit performance with their lone run batted in from Matt Curry who lifted his average to .321 and another hit from red-hot Adalberto Santos (.457) but went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the loss. Mike Colla was charged with five runs, though just one was earned, on eight hits over his five innings. CURVE/HARRISBURG SERIES: In a virtual repeat of the teams last road trip, Altoona now welcomes the Harrisburg Senators (AA - Nationals) to town for a three-game set Tuesday through Thursday. Well see a pair of rematches in the series as Mike Colla and Jeff Mandel will square off on Tuesday (Mandel earned win last week) and Nathan Baker and Danny Rosenbaum meet up on Wednesday (Rosenbaum got the win). Harrisburg took the series last week at Metro Bank Park, 2-1, but enters this set still trailing in the all-time series at 136-110. FOR ALTOONA: After two outstanding starts to begin the year, Nathan Baker came back to earth at Harrisburg a week ago. Over 2.2 innings, Baker walked a career high-tying four batters and yielded five runs (four earned) on four hits in his shortest outing of the year en route to the defeat. Before that, Baker had surrendered just one earned run in his first 11 innings this year while picking up wins over the Erie SeaWolves and Richmond Flying Squirrels. The 24-yearold was a fifth-round draft selection by the Pirates out of Ole Miss in 2009 and spent all of last year in Bradenton, going 10-8 with a 3.34 ERA over 29 appearances for the Marauders. For more on Baker, see page two. FOR HARRISBURG: Last week in Harrisburg, lefty Danny Rosenbaum dominated the Curve. The Ohio native and 22nd-round draft selection of the Washington organization in 2009 pitched a complete-game victory over Altoona, surrendering just one unearned run on four hits, striking out nine and not walking a single batter. Rosenbaum got an impressive 14 outs on the ground that game and overmatched Curve hitters throughout the night. The Xavier University procut enters this start with the third-best ERA in the Eastern League at 1.25, just two spots behind last nights Senators starter, righty Jeff Mandel. Rosenbaums complete game was the first in the E.L. this season. RUNNING WILD: Tuesday nights series opener with the Senators provided a juxtaposition of two completely different offenses. Harrisburg used its considerable speed to steal seven bases on Curve pitchers and catcher Tony Sanchez. Tuesday starter Mike Colla and reliever Kris Harvey have been especially victimized by opposing baserunners. 14 times, opponents have tried to steal with Colla and Harvey on the hill, and 14 times, theyve been successful. Behind the plate, Sanchez has thrown out just four of 25 potential basestealers (16.0%). On the flip side, the Curve have stolen just over half of Harrisburgs Tuesday total all season. Altoona has only pilfered four bags as a team in 2012. CURRYING FAVOR: Curve first baseman Matt Curry has found a good groove at the plate over his last couple of weeks. Dating back nine games, the TCU product is batting .324, including a .412 mark in his last four. Now riding a six-game hitting streak, over the course of which hes batted .375 (9-for-24), Curry has boosted his batting average 40 points since April 15 from .281 to .321. Tuesday night, Curry rapped three hits and drove in the games only Curve run. THE SPACE BETWEEN: The Curve havent played many close games this season. In fact, only four of Altoonas 16 contests to this point have been decided by one or two runs. In the other 12 games decided by three runs or more, the Curve are 5-7 after Tuesday nights 5-1 series-opening loss to the Senators. DR. STRANGEGLOVE: The Curve made two more defensive miscues on Tuesday in their opener with Harrisburg and now have 26 on the season, tied for most in the 12-team Eastern League. Only New Hampshire has made as many errors as the . Statistically speaking, however, Altoona has the worst fielding percentage in the league at .958.
