COMMANDER’S COMMENTS
3

It hasbeenalmostone yearsince IbecameyourWing Commander. I have to saythat it has been a good year withmany good things happening. This edition of the newsletterreports many of these. As youread this newsletter take notice of all the varied events and functionsthat have been accomplished.Florida Wing finished last year asthe #6 wing in aircraft utilizationwith an average of 260 hours perairplane. This year we arecurrently #4 with 56 hours peraircraft as of 27 Feb. With thetraining budget we have availablethis year FLWG should easily endup as #1.Last year we ranked 52 out of 52for Glider utilization. This pastfall the members of Group 4 jumpstarted the glider program. Wehave experienced a lull for the pastfew weeks but are starting upagain in Group 7 and Group 3 thisweekend. Currently we are rankednumber #3 in the nation with 106flights.The FLWG Drill Team andFLWG Color Guard are competingat Maxwell AFB for the SoutheastRegion honors. I believe that wewill be sending both teams to theNational Competition in Ohio.Special Acts completion was stiff this year. We currently have 205Cadets and 18 Senior Membersapproved to participate inNational Special Activities thisyear. 23 Cadets and 3 Senior
Members have been “GreenLighted” for NCSA.
Wing Conference was a special andvery exciting event. Not only wasthere the opportunity to obtainsome very good training buteveryone had the chance to meetnew friends and renew contactwith old friends. Putting a facewith a name makes the email alittle more personal. We also hadthe opportunity to recognize thosemembers who have gone aboveand beyond what is normallyexpected of the CAP member. Myhearty congratulations are againoffered to all those who receivedawards. We have lost our AE Director andchampion. Lt Col Lynn hasmoved on to Southeast Regionstaff. He will be missed but hasleft FLWG in great shape to takeseveral AE awards in the comingyear. Lt Col Lynn accepted last
year’s National AE Award and
Southeast Region AE Award forFlorida Wing at our WingConference.Florida Wing is in position to exceland be recognized as the best wingin the nation in the coming year. The contributions that each of youmake by giving your time toperform all of our missions and toteach our new or less experiencedmembers are what truly makes usgreat. We are entering a very busy timeof the year with many activitiesboth scheduled and unscheduledoccurring in the coming months. As you participate in theseactivities, and in your Squadronmeetings, remember that nomatter how large or how smallyour part is; it is important.Without you, the members of Florida Wing, we would not be thebest Wing in the nation. Becauseof what you do, I am proud toserve as your Wing Commander.
Col. Michael Cook
