In the council elections to be heldon May 3rd the people ofSwansea will make a big choiceabout the future of our City. Here is an opportunity to changeour City for the better - withSwansea Labour - or face thethreat of continuing stagnationand decline under the LiberalDemocrats, the Tories and theIndependents. The election is your chance to help our great city get onthe road to recovery and prosperity and to send a messageto David Cameron and Nick Clegg that we do not accept thechoices they are making - choices that are cutting jobs andwages in Swansea, removing opportunities for youngpeople and taking the Police off our streets.Swansea Labour's values will provide fairness for familiesand children, fresh hope for our city's communities, newopportunities for our people and businesses, support jobsfor younger people and future generations and a 'greener',sustainable Swansea. Swansea Labour will create a 'can do'culture to help turn our city around.I am very proud of Swansea Labour's Manifesto, which isthe result of three years' wide-ranging consultation anddiscussion within the Swansea Labour Party and withstakeholders throughout the City. I wish to record mysincere personal thanks and those of Swansea Labour,to Andrew Davies for his considerable work in pulling it alltogether and writing the final document. This Manifesto shows that Labour has a fresh vision for ourCity - an ambitious, but realistic vision. It is a vision strongenough to meet the challenging times we all face andprovide hope for local communities and businesses. Now is time to end the broken promises and the failure ofthe Liberal Democrats and Independents and provide freshconfidence for our City.So join my colleagues and me on

WelshLabour candidates arecommitted to standing upfor council services in theface of the onslaught weface from the Tory andLiberal Democrat UKcoalition. It is Welsh Labourcandidates that have the values needed to protectessential local services, and to also make thechanges needed so vital council services can riseto meet the challenges of the coming years. In spite of all these challenges, we can worktogether to improve services in Wales. In Swansea, Labour will stand up for:
Jobs and growth
- A Swansea Labour council ispledged to deliver jobs and growth with a focus onavoiding another 'lost generation' of young people.Swansea Labour councillors will play a positive roleto help protect jobs and to stimulate growth andopportunities.
- We oppose the massive Torycuts to Police numbers and want to help deliversafer communities. Swansea Labour councillors willbe committed to delivering safer streets in theircommunities. They will be working with us in WelshGovernment to deliver the additional CommunitySupport officers promised in our 2011 Assemblymanifesto.
Caring for our older citizens
- A Swansea Labourcouncil will work to provide the dignity and careour older people require. A Swansea Labour councilwill build on the success of the free bus passscheme and focus on dignity in care and improvingcare services.
The best start for every child
- From the FlyingStart, Foundation Phase through to extra spendingon pupils in schools and our support for students oneducation fee, it is Welsh Labour that is providingour young people with the best start in life.
A Swansea Labour council has the values to deliverthe fairness that is needed by public serviceworkers, their families and the communities wherewe live. Swansea Labour shares our belief inCouncils that strive to be beacons of best practice.May 3rd provides a big opportunity to tell theTories and Liberal Democrats that we will notaccept their cuts and the lack of growth that isbeing inflicted on Wales. We also know that manyof the 'independent' candidates in the Swanseacouncil elections will hide their true politicalcolours and lack a coherent strategy that willprotect and support local communities.'Standing up for Wales' is the promise made by allWales' Labour candidates, and is the promise madeby Swansea Labour in this Manifesto. I hope youwill support them in that vital work
