ans l’éditorial du numéro 26 de Fantas-sins le général de corps d’armée HervéCHARPENTIER, commandant les orcesterrestres, écrivait : « les populations resterontà coup sûr l’enjeu et l’environnement princi-pal de nos engagements. Or l’inanterie, à pied,débarquée, ô combien vulnérable, est par na-ture l’arme du combat au contact des popula-tions. La guerre « irrégulière » est plus cruelleet exigeante que toute autre. Elle requiertméthode et sang roid pour ne pas assimiler lapopulation à l’ennemi qui l’utilise et l’instru-mentalise. Courage et retenue pour aire aceà ses attaques qui ignorent délibérément toutdu droit de la guerre. Détermination et rusepour le contraindre au combat et le discrédi-ter dans son propre camp sans jamais dérogerà nos propres exigences éthiques ».Cette description des confits asymétriques,aujourd’hui le lot des armées occidentales,intègre les opérations en zone urbaine, thèmeprincipal de ce numéro de Fantassins.La population mondiale atteint sept milliardsd’individus et ne cesse de croître, et sur ce to-tal la moitié vit déjà dans des zones urbaines.Les confits se déroulent et se dérouleront deplus en plus dans les zones urbanisées : enAghanistan comme en Côte d’Ivoire, au Libancomme au Kosovo, nos soldats opèrent dansun milieu urbain, qu’il s’agisse des modestes« compounds » aghans ou de vraies villescomme Abidjan. Les modes d’action dièrentévidemment suivant qu’il s’agit d’engager lecombat dans un village ou une mégalopole,et les Actions en Zone Urbaine, connues sousl’acronyme « AZUR », incluent désormais desphases de stabilisation et de reconstruction.Cependant les savoir-aire de base sont com-muns, et le antassin d’aujourd’hui comme dedemain doit s’y préparer.C’est pourquoi l’armée de terre a décidé d’en-gager dans ce domaine un eort sans précé-dent. Le centre d’entraînement aux actions enzone urbaine de Sissonne, réalisation ambi-tieuse, en est un des principaux éléments.Arme des terrains diciles, l’inanterie estnaturellement très impliquée dans la miseen œuvre de cette politique. C’est pourquoil’école de l’inanterie a adapté l’instruction deses stagiaires et ses inrastructures au dé ma- jeur que représente la préparation aux actionsen zone urbaine au sein de la maison-mère :un tiers des exercices consacrés à la ormationdes commandants d’unité sont désormais dé-volus à cette préparation. La récente installa-tion de l’école à proximité du « pôle d’entraî-nement Provence » a aussi été l’occasion d’ydévelopper de nouvelles inrastructures. Ennl’inanterie adapte ses matériels actuels et encours de développement à ce milieu urbain sidicile et si particulier. Les exercices conduitsen 2011 au CENZUB dans le cadre de l’expéri-mentation tactique du système FELIN en sontl’illustration.Le second thème de ce numéro de Fantassinsest consacré au retour d’expérience sur lerenseignement en opération. Les articles surce sujet traitent principalement de l’Agha-nistan, théâtre d’opération majeur de notrearmée où l’inanterie est en première ligne.Mais là encore, comme en matière de combaturbain, nous opérons en étroite coopérationavec nos camarades des autres armes et desautres armées, et aussi avec les armées étran-gères. Comme nous le prouvent les articlesportant sur ce sujet, l’intégration avec nos al-liés est plus orte qu’elle ne l’a été dans aucundes confits des vingt dernières années. Le do-maine du renseignement démontre de açonévidente cette réalité des opérations contem-poraines.Ce confit aghan estaussi le premier, de-puis la guerre d’Al-gérie, dans lequell’armée de terre doit,dans la durée, aireace à un ennemi déterminé et aronter despertes humaines importantes : c’est la raisonpour laquelle j’ai tenu à conclure ce numéroavec l’article du colonel Francis Chanson, an-cien directeur de la ormation de notre école,sur « le che de section et la mort ». Il est làencore de notre devoir d’aronter ces réalitésqui sont le propre du métier militaire et d’ypréparer nos soldats et leur encadrement.Enn, lorsque ce numéro 27 de Fantassinssera diusé, l’école de l’inanterie sera dansla deuxième année de sa présence en Dracé-nie. Après le déménagement de Montpellierà Draguignan eectué durant l’été 2010, sitoutes les dicultés ne sont pas encore levées,si certaines inrastructures restent encore àconstruire, j’estime d’ores et déjà que le bi-lan de ce transert est largement positi : lesécoles de l’artillerie et de l’aviation légère del’armée de terre sont désormais regroupéesgéographiquement avec notre école dans cequ’il convient d’appeler le pôle de ormationProvence, ce qui entraîne d’ores et déjà des e-ets d’interactions interarmes positis. Au seindes écoles militaires de Draguignan, et avecla proximité du camp de Canjuers, l’inanteriedispose désormais d’un ensemble de moyensd’instruction et d’entraînement unique enEurope, cohérent et bien adapté à sa missionqui est de ormer les ches de l’inanterie auxconfits d’aujourd’hui et de demain.

Determinationand guile to orce him to ght and discredit him inhis own camp without ever deviating rom our ownethical requirements.»This description o asymmetricconficts which are now the lot oWestern armies in-cludes urban operations, the main theme o this issueo FANTASSINS.The world population has just reached seven billionpeople and continues to grow, and hal o this totalalready lives in urban areas. Conficts take place andwill increasingly take place in urban areas: in Agha-nistan as in Ivory Coast, in Lebanon as in Kosovo, oursoldiers already operate in an urban environment, be itthe small Aghan « compounds » or a real city like Abi-djan. The courses o action obviously dier accordingto whether to engage in combat in a town or a mega-lopolis, and the operations in urban areas, known bythe acronym « AZUR » (

) nowinclude stabilization and reconstruction phases. Howe-ver the basic skills are common and the inantryman o today and tomorrow will have to prepare or it.That is why the Army has decided to undertake anunprecedented eort in this area. The Urban AreasTraining Centre (
Centre d’Entraînement aux Actions en Zone Urbaine-CENZUB
) in Sissonne, which is an ambi-tious achievement, is a key element o this.The Inantry is naturally very involved in the imple-mentation o this policy, since it is the arm o dicultenvironments. The School o Inantry has thereoreadapted the curriculum o its students and its acilitiesto the major challenge posed by the preparation o ac-tions in urban areas in the branch headquarters : onethird o the total o the company commanders courseexercises is devoted to this preparation. The recent ins-tallation o our school near the Provence training areahas also been an opportunity to develop new acilities.Lastly the Inantry adapts its current and under deve-lopment equipment to this so dicult and particularurban environment: the exercises conducted in 2011in CENZUB during the FELIN tactical experimentationdemonstrate it.The second topic covered in this issue o FANTASSINSis devoted to the lessons learnt rom the intelligencearea in operation. The articles on this subject dealmainly with Aghanistan, the major theatre o opera-tions o our Army in which the Inantry is in the rstline. There again, as in urban warare, we work closelywith our comrades rom other branches and other ar-med orces, but also with oreign armies; as evidencedby the articles on this topic, the integration with ourallies is stronger than it has ever been in any o theconficts o the past twenty years : the intelligence areaclearly demonstrates this reality o operations nowa-days.The Aghan confict is also the rst since the war in Al-geria where the army has to be conronted enduringlyby a determined enemy and ace signicant losses o lie: that is why I wanted to conclude this issue with thearticle o Colonel Francis CHANSON, ormer Director o training at our School, « the platoon leader and death.»It is there again our responsibility to ace these realitieswhich are characteristic o the soldier’s proession, andto prepare our soldiers, NCO’s and ocers.Lastly, when this 27
th
issue o FANTASSIN will be re-leased, the School o Inantry will be in its second yearo presence in the Draguignan area, ater the moverom Montpellier to Draguignan conducted duringthe summer o 2010. Though all obstacles are notyet removed, though some acilities still need to bebuilt, I can estimate that the result is largely positive :the Artillery and Army Aviation schools are now ourneighbors and are part o what could be called the« Provence Training Centre ».This vicinity already en-tails very productive combined arms interactions. Wi-thin the Military Schools o Draguignan, and with theCanjuers Training Area too, the Inantry rom now onprots o a set o training means and acilities which isunique in Europe, coherent and adapted to its missionwhich is to educate and train the commanders o to-morrow’s Inantry.
