Experiment # 5 Resonance: The Speed of Sound

Abstract The objective of the experiment was to measure the speed of sound in the air at room temperature. Sound waves produced by a tuning fork hit by a rubber mallet were sent down a graduated cylinder filled with air from the mouth of the cylinder to the water surface. The waves reflect back up the tube from the water surface and interfere with the waves traveling downward. By properly adjusting the water level, a resonance condition was established creating a sound. Knowing the frequency of the tuning fork and the position of the water level, the speed at which sound waves travel through the gas is found. The speed of sound obtained in this experiment was then compared to the standard speed of sound which was 34,360 cm/s. Question and Answer 1. Through what fraction of vibration has the prong of a tuning fork moved while the sound travelled down to the water surface inside the pipe and reflected back up to the fork again? -The sound wave travelled of wave down and of a wave up; therefore the tuning fork vibrated of a cycle.

2. What is the approximate wavelength of the fundamental frequency of a closed tube 35.0 cm long if the tube has a diameter of 4.000 cm? Wavelength = 4(L+0.3d) *L-length *d-diameter Wavelength = 4(35.0 cm + 0.3 (4.000 cm)) Wavelength = 4(35.0 cm+ 1.000cm) Wavelength= 4 (36.0 cm) Wavelength = 140 cm

3. A tuning fork of frequency 384 Hz exhibits resonance with a closed tube 20.0 cm long

and 4.000 cm in diameter. What is the speed of the sound wave?

*f- frequency *t-time Speed of sound = Wavelength /t Speed of sound = Wavelength (1/t) or Wavelength (f) Speed of sound = [4(L+0.3d)]f Speed of sound = [4(20.0 cm +0.3(4.000 cm))] 384 Hz Speed of sound= [4(20.0 cm + 1.000 cm)] 384 Hz Speed of sound = [4(21.0cm)] 384 Hz Speed of sound = [84.0 cm] 384 Hz Speed of sound = 3.2 x 104 cm/s
