: “
Meet Terry Malloy”
What’s on for today and why?
Today students will be introduced to a new set of literary skills by learning how to do a filmanalysis. Students will begin a short one week film unit with, “On the Waterfront.” The differentlessons will have them thinking analytically about different roles that go into creating a film. The purpose of today’s lesson is to expose students to ways in which producers might start to developa screen write.
What to Do
When students walk into the room, give them each a number 1-5. Once everyone has arrived, split them up and have group #’s 1-5 congregate. Each group should circle up their desks. Next, hand each group out a piece of paper which will read an example of a film treatment for the first15 minutes of the film:“
Meet Terry Malloy
. He is an ex prize-fighter. He gets jobs pretty easily with the help of his brother Charley who happens to be the local mobster’s right hand man. He recently got anew job working on the docks down in Hoboken, NJ for the union boss, - Mr. Mobster himself, Jonny Friendly. Turns out, - Johnny Friendly ‘aint so
friendly
. Terry is asked to do asmall favor for his brother and before he knows it he’s involved in the murder case of afellow worker down at the docks. Terry’s in trouble.”The groups are going to be writing a film pitch for the above scenario. First explain to studentswhat a film treatment is.
It is a synopsis of a short story or scenario.
Then explain how a filmtreatment works. The film pitch should ‘pitch’ or sell the groups idea on how this movie (theentire movie) should pan out. The students should write their pitch to explain what happens toTerry Malloy and how the movie ends. Students can create an outline or write full sentences. After you give the students enough time, briefly go around the room and have the groups sharetheir responses. Ask questions if students’ examples need more elaboration. Next, watch the first 4 chapters of the film up to the end of the scene selection, “JohnnyFriendly.” Have students take note of the characteristics they are introduced to in the first severalscenes. Have them focus on Terry and the other mob characters.
