HARRIET Harman, the shadow culture secretary, yesterday called forNews Corp to be stripped of its 39per cent stake in BSkyB.Speaking on the Sunday PoliticsShow, Harman said that RupertMurdoch was “not a fit and properperson” to own a broadcast licence because of the “widespreadcriminality” that went on at hisBritish newspapers.Murdoch-led News Corp, whichowns a 39.1 per cent controllingstake in BSkyB, publishes The Sunand formerly published The News of the World via its British divisionNews International.Harman’s comments follow last week’s announcement that Ofcom, the media regulator, has widened itsinvestigation into whether NewsCorp is a “fit and proper” owner of a broadcast licence to also includeevidence of phone hacking.Ofcom escalated its inquiry by asking News Corp to share privatedocuments relating to the civillawsuits brought by victims of phonehacking at its British newspapers. The probe is also evaluating thepropriety of News Corp executive James Murdoch’s role as a BSkyBdirector.Ofcom could choose to strip BSkyBof its broadcast licence unless JamesMurdoch resigns from the board orNews Corp sells its controlling stake.Harman yesterday reiterated hercalls for Jeremy Hunt to resign afteremails suggesting he passed sensitiveinformation to News Corp regardingits ill-fated bid for the shares inBSkyB it didn’t already own.BORIS Johnson is set to gain controlof suburban rail services after thetransport secretary Justine Greeninggave
