SGOS 4 Series
Bandwidth Management: Limiting Bandwidth
What is Bandwidth Management?
Bandwidth Management (BWM) is a new eature in SGOS 4.1. It lets you to classiy, control and, i required, limitthe amount o bandwidth used by dierent classes o network trac fowing into or out o the ProxySG anddestined or single or multiple devices. Bandwidth management provides the ollowing benets:
•Guaranteesthatcertaintrafcclassesreceiveaspecifedminimumamountoavailablebandwidth.
(See the note below.)
•Limitscertaintrafcclassestoaspecifedmaximumamountobandwidth.•Prioritizescertaintrafcclassestodeterminewhichclasseshavepriorityoverotherclassesor
available bandwidth. As a result, BWM prevents resource-greedy applications rom aecting the perormance o other, mission-critical programs. It also enables you to balance the demands o bandwidth-intensive applications, such asHTTP and Instant Messaging (IM).
Note: The ProxySG does not reserve bandwidth or otherwise guarantee that available bandwidth can sustainany o the bandwidth limits congured on it. The ProxySG only shapes various trac fows passing through it
andprioritizessomeowsaccordingtoconfguredpolicy.
Goal
Limiting the amount o bandwidth that a client can use to access a Web site. The site ebay.com is used asan example.
Steps
Deploying bandwidth management is perormed in three phases:
1
Creating one or more bandwidth classes.
2
Conguring a Blue Coat policy with the desired bandwidth settings.
3
Testing the conguration and new policy.
