While many smartphone users are familiar with apps such as Google Maps, most areunaware of the fact that there are many other smart ways to use mobile mapping apps, regardless of whether you own an iPhone or an Android based device. Here are sometips to help you get the most out of them.
Google Maps
Google Maps is the grandfather of all mobile mapping apps. It is as its name implies,Google Maps gives you online map data one can view in various modes, including‘satellite’ which shows satellite imagery of course, and ‘hybrid’ which will show roadsand major highway markings superimposed or drawn onto the satellite imagery.Google Maps, however, is much more than ‘just a mapping display app,’ it can also beused to mark important locations which are of interest to you, as well as help you withdirections. To find out how to get from point A to point Z, with Google Maps you simply place or drop a pen on the locations you are interested in traveling to or knowing about. As youdo so, written (as in text displayed on your screen) instructions will automagicallyappear telling you which direction to travel for how many kilometers, whether you needto make a left or a right, what highway to get on, what exit to use, etc.To easily get the hang of using Google Maps, it is best to drop pins from your homelocation first, then drop the second pin on your friend’s house or some other locationyou absolutely know and are certain of its location. After you do this simple testexercise, you can read the directions to the location you have chosen supplied by theapp, by doing this you will know instantly just how accurate (or not) Google Maps is andwhat adjustments you might need to make accordingly.
Depending on how far you wish to travel, it is best to drop multiple pins along the way.Sometimes, shortcuts along side roads will appear which can save you time.
Setting Reminder Zones
One of the handiest features of any smartphone is a simple ‘to do’ list. While these aretried and true tools people have long used, you can take your ‘to do’ list to a whole newlevel of very cool and practical functionality by incorporating mapping features usingtheir geolocation technology which is built right into them.Let’s say you need to pick up some eggs on the way home, along with a few items fromtwo other locations. By using reminder apps which have geolocation ‘smarts’ built intothem, you can have these apps warn you when you approach a store or location whereyou are supposed to stop and do something, or also prompt you after you drive past thearea to help insure that you won’t forget. These apps are entirely programmable thisway, you can set them up to work whichever way you are most comfortable handling todo tasks. The point in doing this is that by using geolocation technology, you won’t have toremember anything, when you are either in the relevant area or leaving it, the app willdo all the work and keep you informed via its reminders.
Finding Locations
Another handy feature with mapping apps is their ability to identify things you find to beof interest. Let’s say you want to find out where all the shopping malls are, or certainkinds of restaurants. By using these kinds of ‘find x’ mobile apps, you can instantlyidentify places of interest to visit in your surrounding area.Quite often, apps which list local business and other types of venues, often include their contact information. A word to the wise: if you intend to go see a movie or stop at acertain popular restaurant where seating is limited, it behooves you to call them first onthe phone to make sure there’s room available or that your reservation will be made inyour name. It is not enough to just go blindly head out to some place which shows up onthese apps, if the place is overbooked you might end up traveling there in vain.
What if my ‘favorite place’ is not shown?
If your favorite places are not automagically shown in your app, you can trydownloading competing software which might provide more details or do a better job islisting venues, or you can (in worst case) mark your favorite spots manually.
