Description. The main character in the narrative who takes things forward as he/she undertakes some sort of mission for which he/she gets a reward- often the reward is the affection of the heroine. In the past, the hero was usually male. The character who seeks to stop the hero from succeeding his/her mission to gain power, glory and riches for themselves. This character is often male and wants the heroine for himself. The heroine is the reward for the hero if he succeeds in his mission. In the past, stereotypical heroines were passive figures, but more recently this has changed. This character provides the hero with important help in the form of information or gadgets. Sometimes the character is very wise or has special powers of some sort. The faithful companion of the hero, the helper is there with the hero throughout the mission, though he/she does not complete the mission him/herself. This character sets the hero off on the mission.
