Here’s a great opportunity for young people to give fishing atry. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has released a list of upcoming fishing events, most of them intended just for kids.The department has a “Children’s Fishing Program” whichprovides kids with the opportunity for a fun and successful fishingexperience at locally organized fishing events. Organizers of theseevents often are charitable, community, or non-profit groups suchas fire departments, fish and game clubs, Rotary, Lions, townrecreation committees, 4-H clubs, and scouts.Most kids’ fishing events are open to the public, although theymay be restricted to town residents or to a particular group of individuals. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department providesabout 20,000 eight-to-ten inch trout for the program, with eachevent receiving 150 to 300 fish.Kids’ fishing events generally start in late April and continuethrough June. A list of the events, which is periodically updated,appears on Fish & Wildlife’s website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com). Click on “Fishing” and then on “Kids Fishing Events.”Vermont Fish & Wildlife also has a “Let’s Go Fishing” Programwhere trained volunteers teachand encourage young peopleand their families to fish. Thevolunteer instructors teach fish-ing skills, how to use differenttypes of tackle, the importanceof good aquatic habitat, fishingethics and fishing regulations.Clinics are planned throughoutthe state during the spring andsummer months. Anglers are finding some very good trout fishing onmany Vermont stream sections, including on some riv-ers that were hit hard by Tropical Storm Irene. The keyis finding good habitat, sometimes upstream or down-stream of areas that were changed during or after thestorm.Streams are very dynamic systems and flooding is anatural process that helps to shape trout habitat. Poolsare scoured, trees may fall into the channel and createnew hiding cover, and spawning gravels are refreshed.While the pool you once fished may have filled in,another one was likely created. Vermont’s wild brook,brown and rainbow trout have evolved with floods sowhere habitat conditions are good, you can expect tofind trout.State Fisheries Scientist Chet MacKenzie, workingout of the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department’sRutland office, points out that stream fishing thisspring has been excellent.“Although there are certain reaches of rivers thathave been seriously impacted by Tropical Storm Ireneand post storm reconstruction efforts,” said MacKenzie,“the fishing in many rivers and streams in southwest-ern Vermont this spring has been the best I have seenor heard about in the last 26 years. It is probably dueto the warm water temperatures and low flows we hadon opening weekend which made the fish hungry andanglers willing to stay on the rivers.”“I’ve seen pictures of or heard of many large fishcaught from the Middlebury, Poultney, Mettawee,Neshobe, and Castleton Rivers, Otter Creek andFurnace Brook,” added MacKenzie.“I recently spoke to two non-resident anglers thatwere under the impression that Vermont rivers hadbeen devastated by last summer’s flood,” he added. “Ihad to explain there were many places left to fish inthe state and fishing this spring has been fantastic.”Brian Chipman, State Fisheries Scientist in EssexJunction, is seeing similar stream fishing opportunitiesfor anglers in his area of the state.“The rivers in northwestern Vermont came out of last year’s floods in very good shape, and anglersfound nearly ideal opening week fishing conditions,”said Chipman. “In fact, for the first time ever, condi-tions allowed us to complete our first two-year-oldbrown trout stocking prior to opening day in theLamoille River trophy section in Fairfax, and manyanglers took advantage of the opportunity.”While stocking of most other waters will be donelater this spring, wild trout provide the bulk of earlyseason catches.“Some of the best wild trout fishing in my districtcan be found in sections of the Winooski River inRichmond and Bolton, the Lamoille River inCambridge and Johnson, and the Missisquoi River inWestfield and Troy,” Chipman said.
