MOTHER’S DAY 2012
I
talk to my mother every day. Atthis point in our lives we are closefriends. She does homework withmy daughter every night.I had wonderful relationships withboth of my grandmothers too. AndI’ve been very lucky in life to have suchfantastic examples of strong, energetic, optimistic women.I’m not sure that everybody hasthose examples that lead us forwardto great success in life. And I’m reallygrateful for each of these women andtheir giving nature and high work ethic. All of the mothers that have been hereto take care of me have been optimistic hard workers. My Mom’s mother, Honey, attended college andgraduated when just 13% of women in the countrywere doing that. She taught for years on the WestSide of Chicago, and helped to lead national mathconferences for teachers. My Dad’s mother startedworking when she was just 16 years old. My Nanalived in an orphanage during part of the depressionand worked to keep some sense of order with hersiblings as they were separated. Nana was a teamster. My own mother, worked full time as a teacheras soon as we were in school full time ourselves.During those years she continuedher education and went on to gettwo Masters Degrees in other areasof Education. My younger brotherremembers fondly working on hishomework along side my Mom as shetried to complete her coursework.I still think of Honey every time Ismell Chanel #5, or when browniesare just coming out of the oven. MyNana’s pasta sauce with neck bones:those avors still resonate when myfather tries to recreate this day longcooking tradition. And while I don’thave a sense of smell that remindsme of my mother, I feel like I channel her up beatspirit when I need to address a group or mingle ina crowd. Each of these women, were funny andoutgoing and energetic. And not because thereweren’t physical struggles: knotted arthriticngers and knees, tinnitus, heart conditions. Mymom and my grandmothers just had an extrabeat of optimism that got them through each day.And while I have my grey moments, I would say I tooam fairly energetic and outgoing, often smiley.I’m sure it’s genetic.
Optimism is genetic
