Pets and Animals

Pets & Animals are kept by many people as companions the most common being cats and dogs. Other mammals make good pets, like rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, and hamsters. Some people keep reptiles, amphibians, and fish in tanks or other enclosures. Others have birds in cages. The first domesticated, or tame, animals were kept by ancient people since about 2000 BC, but we are interested in animals in general and love to learn more about them, including extinct prehistoric animals. We want to be aware of wild animals and insects in our environment. With our pets, there are questions about how to choose them, how to care for and feed them. We trust the veterinarian, but some matters can be handled without paying for advice. Fellow animal lovers offer advice and encouragement in situations where the owner can use others expertise to make improvements in their pets life.

He sells the corn at his vegetable stand. He sells one ear for 25 cents. He sells four ears for $1. 34

He sells all his corn in just one month. The neighbors love his corn. The corn is fresh. It is bright yellow. It is tasty. It is delicious. The birds love his corn, too. They dont pay for it. They eat it while it is in the field. They dont cook it. They eat it raw. The farmer doesnt get angry. Birds have to eat, too. So do cows. The farmer has one cow. He gives his cow fresh corn every summer. The cow loves the corn. It eats a lot of yellow corn in the summer. NO FRIENDS FOR ME I am lonely. I am always by myself. I meet people every day. I smile at them. I say hello. I am nice to them. I want to have a friend. But I have no friends. What is wrong with me? 1. Pre-Listening Exercise -------------------Think of a bus journey you make regularly or invent one. Try to write or speak about it in sentences, using the following words:bus stop, time-table, fare, conductor, driver, bell, ticket. 2: Script -----Michele: Excuse me, is this the right stop for St. Paul's cathedral? Andrew: Yes, it is. There is a map here which tells you the number of the bus. Michele: Oh, yes, I see. So, the number 8 bus goes to St. Paul's? Andrew: That's right. And it tells you on the time-table how often they go. I am going in that direction. I'll tell you when to get off. Michele: That's very kind of you. Andrew: No problem. The driver will tell you if you ask but they sometimes forget. Michele: Look, here comes the bus now. Andrew: Let's sit downstairs, it's easier to get off. Michele: Thank you. Is it a long ride? Andrew: Yes, it is quite far but you will see a lot. Have you got a ticket? Michele: No, I haven't. Should I have bought one? Andrew: Well, it's cheaper if you buy a ticket for the day. But don't worry, you can pay on the bus. Michele: Only problem is, I don't have much change for the fare. Andrew: Don't give him a large note. He won't like it. Give him coins if you can. Michele: I've got one or two. Oh look! There's the Houses of Parliament! Andrew: You get a good view from the bus. It's more interesting than the Underground but, of course, it takes much longer. Michele: Well, I've got plenty of time. Andrew: Here's the ticket man now. One to St. Paul's, please... There you are, I'll get it for you. Michele: Let me give you the money. I'm so glad I met you.

48

Andrew: And I'm glad I met you. In fact, I think I'll take a trip to St. Paul's as well. I can 'phone and cancel my other business. We'll ring the bell in a minute. Do you mind if I join you? Michele: Not at all, but let's have a coffee first. Then we'll be proper tourists!

1. Pre-Listening Exercise -------------------Have you ever been to an island? How did you travel there? Did you enjoy the trip? What method of travel do you like best? 2. Script -----Fatima : It's a beautiful day but so hot! Navid: It will be cooler on the water. Fatima : Yes, I can feel the breeze now. This was a lovely idea. Navid: I'm so glad you like boats. Fatima : I've never been on a boat like this before. How far is it to the island? Navid: It takes about an hour. It is a clear day so you will see it soon. Fatima : Does anyone live there? Navid: Only in the summer when visitors go to see the castle and the houses where people lived a long time ago. In the winter I suppose people might go sometimes but not to stay. Fatima : I expect the weather can be very stormy in the winter. Navid: Yes, and the journey can be dangerous. Fatima : The boat is rocking a bit now. Navid: Do you feel okay? Fatima : Oh yes, I won't be sick. Navid: Later on, the guide will tell us about the island on the loudspeaker. Fatima : And perhaps we can buy souvenirs when we get there. Navid: Yes, there's a little shop. You can buy things on the boat too. Would you like a drink? Fatima : Oh, yes please. Can you get me a Pepsi? Navid: Sure. I'll see what they have. You stay here.

49

Fatima : Hang on for a moment. Look at those beautiful birds. We are in the middle of the water now. You can see the coast on both sides. Navid: The birds make such a noise. Fatima : No more than the children! There are a lot of families here, aren't there? Navid: Yea, it's a nice trip for them but they'll need to be careful when they get there. There are lots of narrow steps. Fatima : I found stepping on to the boat quite difficult. The gangway moves about so much. Then we had to climb up here on to the deck. Navid: I like it up here best though, don't you? The engine makes a noise downstairs and it's too warm. Fatima : I'd be happy to stay here for hours. Navid: I'll go and get the drinks now. Afterwards we can walk around a little. Fatima : I just can't wait to get there!

There people took our luggage and put it in the aero plane and then after about twenty minutes, we got on too. I was a little afraid at the first flight in an aero plane. LIFE WILL BE BETTER He was poor He needed more money . He needed a good job. He had a job. But it wasnt a good job. It was a bad job. He was a waiter. He worked in a restaurant. It was a cheap restaurant. The meals were cheap. The customers were cheap. They usually gave him quarters for tips. Sometimes they gave him a dollar.

56

Sometimes they gave him nothing. That made him angry. Why did they give him nothing? He was polite. He was helpful. Yet they gave him nothing. He wanted to kick those customers. But then he would go to jail. He didnt want to go to jail. So he went to school. School was free. He wanted to be a mechanic. He liked to fix things. He wanted to fix cars. He wanted to own a car shop. He would make money. He would hire other mechanics. They would work for him. He would buy a house. He would get married. He would have a family. Life would be good. Right now life was bad. But he would make it better.

MY BEST FRIEND 57

Laura is my best friend. We are in the third grade. We do everything together. We walk to school together. We eat lunch together at school. Lauras mother gives her tuna sandwiches for lunch. My mother gives me peanut butter sandwiches for lunch. We share our sandwiches with each other. Sometimes Laura gets apples for lunch. Sometimes I get peaches. We share our fruit with each other. We help each other with our homework. She helps me with history. I help her with arithmetic. We spend the weekends together. Her parents invite me to their house, or my parents invite her to our house. We sleep over. I spend the night at her house, or she spends the night at my house. We talk about everything. We talk about our brothers. They are so silly. We talk about our teachers and our parents. We love them We talk about the boys in class. We dont like them. They are so silly. 58
