What to Do
Re-watch the last two remaining chapters of the movie. Once again, have the students take closenotes on the plot, sound effects and point of view of the camera.Break the class up into groups of 4-5. Each group will have a specific role in creating theAudacity news clip. The roles will be:
Speakers/Reporters –
this group is responsible for reading with emphasis, meaning:reading with appropriate tone and articulation according to the scenario. The group candecide if there will be more than one reporting in the audio clip and if they will be talkingto each other about the crime on the waterfront.
Writers
- this group will be working closely with the reporters. There job is to transfer their notes into a scripted dialogue. What happened on the waterfront in these scenes? How will their news report deliver the news in their radio show? They get to come upwith a name for the show.
Sound Technicians-
the role of this group is to find sound effects that will be appropriatefor the news report show. (Example: type writer typing before the show starts, sounds thatmaybe heard on the waterfront: water, engines, men yelling, etc.) If the sounds cannot becreated by the students, they can find the sound effects online.
Editors
- the editors are responsible for mixing the entire project. They will act as the producers. This group will be responsible for recording the reporters, and working side by side with the sound technicians in recording the sound effects. Once everything isrecorded, the editors will edit, and polish up the news report audio clip. This activity may require a lot of time. If it is needed, stop the students work progress to re-group before the end of the period. Continue working the following day for as much time as needed tocomplete the news report.
