accomplishedamantobeignoredor
lightly
dismissed.
Apartfrom
hispopularityasa
thrillerwriter,of
which
The
Thirty-Nine
Steps
is
probably
themostfamous,heexcelled
in
many
differentfields,
eventually
servingasGovernor-General
of
Canadafrom
1935untilhis
deathin
1940.
However,
whatmaybeanembarrassmenttoourdissipated
modernistbecomesa
source
of
inspirationandencouragementtoourselves.In1910Buchanwroteastory
called
The
Groveof
Astarofh,
throughwhich
themain
protagonist
isdrawn
by
his
Jewishblood
into
aself-destructive
worshipoftheancientgoddess
Astaroth.Thesetting
is
in
Africa,
wheretwotravellers,thepart-Jewish
Lawson,
togetherwithournarrator,happenuponan
ancient
templeset
amidst
agroveoftall,
slender
trees.
Ournarratorisabletosurmisethroughhis
archaeological
knowledge
thatthetemple
isdevoted
tothe
Old
Testament
goddess,
Astaroth,whohadadevastating
effect
upon
the
Jew
andwho
was
eventually
driven
away
by
theprophetElijah.Lawson,whoseJewish
grandfather-
wassaidto
sell
antiques
in
a
Brightonback-street,isstrangelyfascinated
by
theplaceanddecidestobuild
his
home
by
thetemple.OneissomewhatremindedofJackLondon'sbook,
The
Callof
theWild,
whereadog,half-huskyandhalf-wolf,returnstoitswolfpackinthe
wilderness.
Threeyearslaterour
narrator
revisits
._
thespottofindthehomecompletedbutLawsoninanunaccountablestateofphysicalandmoral
decline.It
transpires
that
Lawson
has
been
compelled
by
somedarkforcetovisitthe
shrine
regularly
every
nightandthence
tolaceratehimself
in
a
self-destructive
frenzy.
NOW
theinterestingthingaboutthestory
isthat
While
Astaroth
has
a
deleterious
effect
onthe
part-Semitic
Lawson,
she
has
precisely
the
OPPOSite
effecton
our
Gentile
narrator.
Astarothwas
the
Jewish
equivalentofthegoddessPersephone
who,
as
a
goddessof
fertility,
castabeneficentinfluenceuponthe
Aryan
peoplesofAncient
Greece.Nevertheless,
againsthisfinerfeelings,ournarratordecides
tosavehis
friend
byfelling
andburning
the
trees,breakingdownthe
temple
andploughingthe
whole
lotbackintothesoil.Ashedoesso
hehearsagentlevoicepleading)avoicetoofine
for
the
sensualear
buttouchingthe
inner
clouds
ofthe
spirit.He
is
aware
that
heisdestroyingthelastshelterofalost
lady
who
broughtnothingbutgoodnessunrepaidintotheWorld.Healsoreasonsthatthespell
whichto
Semiticblood
holdsthe
mystery
of
evil
is
to
him,
of
a
different
race,
only
delicate,rareandbeautiful.Heknowsthathe
has
'drivensomething
lovely
andadorablefromits
last
refugeonearth.'Naturally
this
story,writtenasit
was
in1910,opensupmorequestionsthancaneasilybeanswered.
Its
strengthisthatsuchquestionsgototheheartofourthinking.Forinstance,
how
much
of
herownsoul
did
Britainplough
backintothesoilasa
direct
consequenceof
savingtheinterestsofOrganisedJewry
against
itsGerman'enemy'
in
theSecondWorldWar?ThemorediscerningamongstuscanseehowthetrueenemiesofEuropeanvalueshavemanipulatedtheconsequencesoftheGermandefeat
to
foster
an
all-pervadingcultofugliness,deaftothegentlepleadingofourinnerselves.So,wemight
ask,has
this
only
beenmadepossible
by
'something
lovely
and
adorable
beingdrivenfromitslastrefugeonearth'?Inwhichcase,astraditionalists,howdo
we
reawaken
ourracial
soultoentice
herback?
